Vent but be aware its not straightforward to replace a lost Airpod..

Firstly I lost one of my Airpod 2 PRO my carelessness,my fault not Apple's ...
so i thought ok Ill have to suck it up and buy a new pair.
Then I discovered you could purchase a replacement lost airpod . So off I went to the Apple Store here in Istanbul Turkey..
Sales person was like no problem here you go we have replacement left Airpod 2 Pro in stock they match the serial number .. Paid for it told me to put in it case with existing right one and wait an hour.. (thought ok must charging the new one) .So I thought ok going grab a coffee has im in the shopping mall and wait an hour and try it .
After just over an hour I opened the case and no response from phone .. went online followed the procedure for replacing lost airpod still nothing ..
Quick search online and noted each Airpod must be matching in firmware(makes sense this is critical)..the new left one(replacement was on old firmware 5e311 old one original 6a301).
So back to store to try and resolve this is where it goes messy .. advised take it home leave it overnight it will update so ok did that , next morning no change still mismatched (could actually set them up as individual airpods but would not work as a pair (stereo) .
So contact Apple support online advised to go through procedure as told at store (did that may be twenty times in one day still nothing).

Back to the store (80km round trip) sales person same one ok we will have to send it to service department (no refund offered !!! requested refund for replacement and I was going to cut my losses and buy a new pair refund not possible !!!)
So off it goes to service department they will update the firmware to match existing right Airpod in a couple days, waited a week contacted them(FRIDAY) for progress told its in the line waiting, please call back Tuesday we dont work weekends. So call Tuesday sorry its still in the line .. its now 2 weeks since I was at the store ...

Lesson learnt check firmware on box prior to PAYING and leaving store. dont trust salesperson especially if they work on a commission bonus system because they wont appreciate the refund ..

Living in Turkey consumer rights is non existent regardless of brand / small print ..

So much for brand loyalty over the years that said first time in almost twenty years have had to use an APPLE service having owned iphones, apple watches, macbooks everything for the last twenty odd years has been Apple guess my luck run out..

So be aware....

As long as both left and right are from the same generation (gen 1 or gen 2), there is a way to force an upgrade of the firmware of just one. I suspect you'll need to delete the pairing from your phone, remove the newer AirPod from the case, pair the one older one, use it for a bit then plug both the phone and the AirPod case to power to allow the firmware to update. Could take up to 24 hrs as there's no way to force an update (though usually happens pretty quickly in my experience). Hopefully the update is successful. If so, delete the pairing and repeat the process with the other ear bud if they're still not on the same firmware.

been through all procedures numerous times. it is currently at apple service and a call from the engineer on Friday he conceded not possible to update the single airpod if the other is not matching in firmware(his words) so the issue was taken to another level as it is not his decision on issuing replacements for a lost airpod scenario .to be honest I went out and purchased another pair was tired of the numerous excuses and waiting for a call for the next scenario /procedure.. too much misinformation from one staff to another all seem to interpret there own understanding.. if I get em back and fully working as a pair Ill just stick em in the draw for a rainy day.. thanks for the advice anyway...

update 29 October finally offered a refund ... 3 weeks later ..not possible to pair/update firmware where replacement does not match existing Airpod 2 pro in FIRMWARE .. this is from Apple service dept ..no other info/solution provided..

so be aware if you lose your Airpod pro 2 (note pro 2 !! not original pro generation ! ) you may hit a a very inconvenient brick wall when following any provided procedure its generally not a problem for replacement Airpod providing the firmware is identical.. So check the firmware prior to purchasing / leaving store .

since the wait was long for a response or outcome I purchased a newer pair (usb-c) and if I get any issues/lose one im very aware it is not a straight quick turnaround..no matter how loud you shout or express your frustration..

FWIW whilst waiting in the store today to collect refund 3 people in front of me all had Airpod issues ! two identical issue to mine(replacement not working) and one right ear would randomly lose audio .. so my conclusion quality of this product range is questionable ..

have a great day ..brian
