Apple Settings for Ripping Movies?

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone know what settings Apple use for getting movies into iTunes?

I ripped Mean Girls (took 12hours - i really need to get a MacBook Pro), and the files size is larger than the one on iTunes, but the movies I have is shorter.

Apple Information
Mean Girls - Runtime: 1.36.50 Size: 1.06gb

iTunes Information
Mean Girls - Runtime: 1.32.51 Size: 1.40gb

I just wish I knew what settings to use.

I'm using Handbrake, but I'm still not sure what Average Bitrate to use along with the Output Picture Setting.
I've used Bitrate 2000 and Output Picture Setting at 640x 368.

Is this correct for getting movies to play on AppleTV?

The file size (mentioned above with Mean Girls) seems large compared to the one on the Apple iTunes Store.

I use Ave Bitrate of 2500 using H264. If you can stand the long wait go with 2 pass encoding too.

On my MB CD it takes about 4-5 hours for an average movie. With 2 pass encoding at 720 wide. Average size is about 1.6GB. Quality is just like the DVD.

The time will halve on single pass but the quality difference is noticeable (nothing major though).

I used to encode at ave 2500 using Mpeg (not H264) and could rip a movie in about 45 minutes. However I noticed on some movies that the quality was very poor, on others it wasnt so noticeable. Ive found if you have a movie where its mostly shot indoors with solid colour walls the pixelation is much more noticeable. However if a scene is then shot outdoors where the back ground is much more busy then the pixelation is not as noticeable.

Its all about preference. I prefer higher quality but dont want to sit for 4 hours at a time so sometimes forego 2 pass encoding.

Question about widescreen movies, I played a movie on my MB, but there was still the bars on top and bottom, is that because of the movie being in "letterbox" vs widescreen?

Does anyone change output size (mpv) to match the input size(DVD)?

I choose the AppleTV settings in handbrake, but I change the output size to make it larger.

Took like 4-5 hours to complete with the 2 pass and anamorphic checked. But it looks nice.

I think you need to crop the bars out in Handbrake. Simple enough to do just click on 'image settings' or whatever its called at bottom right.

Or maybe the movie is simply at a different aspect ratio. The screen of the MacBook Pro may be 16:10 (I think), but if the movie was shot at 2.35:1, you'll still get black bars on a widescreen monitor (16:9 or 16:10).

DVDRemaster will convert ripped DVDs to be compatable with the iPod. I bought it and have been extremely happy with it. Coverts it to a smaller file size and everything.
