Yeah I can see this happening, it makes total sense for apple Instead raking in the cash they get bubkis.
They don't make that much money from the iTunes store... they make the real money from hardware. "Apple Spotify" exclusive to Apple products would definitely sell a few more, and make people think twice about switching to Palm Pre and Android

Steve Jobs isn't going to agree with you. it's not like Itunes isn't racking in the cash lol. they get 30% of everything sold in the store every tomtom app $33 bucks every song 33 cents. I don't really see this benefiting them either. they would be competing with themselves.

It's so freakin obvious. They should buy Spotify and integrate it into iTunes and iPhone. It would revolutionize the music industry

I got news for you, there has been and always will be places to get music for free on the net. That doesn't mean apple should. Makes little business sense, especially since they have such a large market share at selling music.
You could make the same argument for MS office, since there are office suites available for free and websites on the net to d/l MS office. Makes no sense and you won't be seeing MS give away office.
Although this is true (you'd be amazed at how easy it is to get music from YouTube), Spotify is legal and is actually becoming very popular for people who mostly listen to music on their computer. The artists (read: record labels) get paid from a portion of ad revenue.
In fact, I think they're working on a iPhone app, no idea if Apple will approve it though.
I'm not sure about Apple buying it though.
If this turns out to be a really great idea, iTunes can start offering free music (with ads) right next to the ad-free versions they charge for.

Just because Jobs keep telling you this doesn't make it true. In the last quarter, Apple's revenue from iPods was $1.49 billion. Their revenue from the iTS (also includes iPod accessory sales) was $958 million or just about 65% of iPod revenue and 11% of their total revenue. Don't kid yourself, they make money from the store.
To put the $958M in perspective, their revenue was $341 million for peripheral and other hardware sales and $501 million for software and services sales.
I don't see much incentive for Apple to do this, but I imagine they would allow a Spotify app just as they allow apps from Last.fm, AOL Radio, Pandora, etc.
Except that is so very different because MS makes most of it's money from software, has people, corporations and schools tied into Office software, and there is no difference between a song on Spotify and a song on iTunes, while the open source office suites have typically been less than subpar compared to MS' offerings
Ok thanks for letting me know. Either way, Apple are going to lose out to Spotify, whether its through music sales and/or hardware sales.
You must not know the difference between Spotify and those other services.
Spotify is almost like having the entire iTunes Music Store Library with you everywhere for free. You pick an artist/album/song and just start listening as if you had the song in your iTunes library.
Apple don't need to buy Spotify, but they should replicate the functionality!
Pretty much every song available, free, but with ads once or twice for each album. Its all streamed, quality is identical to iTunes, and it starts instantly. Its a pretty perfect product. Its huge in the UK, everyone I know uses it, its pretty normal now to send people spotify links.
Their iPhone app looks superb, you can just download any songs/albums to the iPhone for offline listening.
However the iPhone app requires a paid-for Spotify account (9.99 a month).
