All Devices Apple should up the power limit on Lightning port for flash drives

Now that flash drives are supported in iOS 13, people with lightning devices will get “This accessory requires too much power” on most USB drives that they try if they don’t have the powered USB camera kit. The solution is a hilarious one which proves that it’s just a software thing and not a limit of the port.

I have the standard USB 2 lightning camera kit and it doesn’t work by just plugging in the flash drive(256GB Samsung Bar Plus), but it works if I use a NON-powered standard USB hub. I even have a wireless mouse plugged in with it and it works perfectly.

I think a lot of us should feedback this and get it changed. Because it can be fixed. Why should I have to use a dangling USB HUB when I could just plug it directly into the camera kit?

Agreed, but it’s an easy way for apple to have their own accessories have an advantage - so it’s unlikely they will cater too much for third party ease of use.

Are you seriously suggesting Apple is not using that kind of practise?

Just look at all the measures they take to not have competetive software as default apps, or limited API access for certain usecases... and so on...

I didn't have the same experience with the USB 3 Lightning Camera Kit. Even with a non-powered hub, I needed to connect to a lightning power source (I have been using a small battery pack and it works)

Try the camera kit with a flash drive plugged into the non-powered USB hub without the power source. It should work, unless the new adapter works differently.

Point I’m trying to get at is it’s pretty garbage that we have to use an external power supply for something that we should be able to just plug in. There’s absolutely no reason hardware wise. Maybe it’s like the poster said above, they’re just trying to get people to buy their new stuff (especially the new iPad). Although it’s been this way since at least iOS 9 as it works the same way on my iPod Touch 5G.

So on my ipad air 3 if i use just the usb 2 camera adapter it will pick my small flashdrives ?

Yup, but it will only work for importing photos for the photos app if you’re below iOS 13. That’s how I knew, it brought up the import screen in the photos app on the iPod Touch.
(Jailbreaking probably works with those file managers available there, it used to anyways)
