Apple's lawyers have put the smack down on TheMonkeyBalls, a site that distributed hacked applications for free.

I know this is the hacker forum and all, but I think this is a great thing. Stealing apps that developers work hard to create is not what jailbreaking should be about. It only hurts those who are working hard to make a buck and to increase the diversity of the AppStore.

Not to mention, distributing free apps is a quick way to get Apple to squash the jailbreak community entirely, leaving those of us who jailbreak for customization, etc, in the cold.

I'm glad it's shut down. We should pay for applications and support developers, not steal their hard work.

I agree. Stealing the hard work of these developers is pathetic.

I run a website that reviews jailbroken iPhone apps, and I get this request SOOOO many times a day

I just ignore them all

I disagree. I was a huge fan of themonkeysball, and was able to try applications I would otherwise never been able to use. It helps you decide which apps are worth buying and which aren't.

How much money of you wasted on Apps that you thought where worth the purchase, but they ended up not being good, or you never used them? This is a solution to the flaw, and that flaw is that you cannot test the apps (at least in emulation) before you buy them.

I'm grateful to the hackers, and I loved installing cracked apps... If I loved the app, I would buy it to support the developer. Just like a cracked app on any platform, having legitimate support from the developer, without relying on crackers to supply updates, and an easy method to installing them via the App Store, nothing beats buying the actual app, if it's worth it.

Good for them. These are not softwares that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, we are talking a few bucks here. If the app doesn't have a free version to try, there are usually plenty of reviews online (app store, forums, youtube, blogs, etc.) to help make an informed decision. There is no reason to steal.

I have gotten a TON of apps from that site.. There are only a few I really enjoyed.. I'm glad I didnt end up paying for them.. It may be a small price to pay, but pennies add up man.. And there is nothing like trying the app out for yourself...

I personally don't care that The Monkeys Ball got shut down.. there are plenty more sites out there.

I call BS.

i've given up on hacking and stuff ever since the FBI caught me and let me off with a warning, and threatened a lot of things to me if i ever did it again, which scared me ********.
i dont want to hack again nor i will support hacking.
im glad apple shut down that site

You see jailbreaking is the art of adding applications forbidden by Apple (like emulators and background changers, or background running apps). Jailbreaking does NOT endorse cracking legal apps and distributing illegally. I know its feels good to get an app that is free when it costs $x.xx. However, we must understand that developers take their time and put it into their app and if they feel that at least some compensation is in order, then we must accept that fact, since without the said developer we wouldn't have the app in the first place.

A cracked app is no different than a cracked Vista/XP copy or a cracked game for PC or PS3, Wii or XBox. They are all illegal and should be avoided.

Please remember the nature of jailreaking, adding usefulness to our beloved phones, not making them illegal pieces of hardware/software.

So because the app is only a dollar or 2 it's ok? Do you think it's ok to steal milk from the grocery store too?

As a developer who has a couple 99 cent apps in the store I want to say thanks. My family appreciates it.

Saying everyone is a bold statement. I can guarantee not everyone steals.

Let me say this more clearly... if your post has been deleted from this thread, it's probably (with a couple of exceptions) because you solicited alternate means to pirate App Store apps.

DO NOT SOLICIT HELP IN PIRACY ON MACRUMORS.

Hijacking a perfectly good thread on an important topic of discussion is also extremely rude. So stop doing it.

You've been warned. Thanks.

ohhh come on in this day and age EVERYONE has atleast downloaded music of a site for free or had their friend burn them a copy of a cd they had. Im just being realistic.

i just hate the people saying dont steal apps.. But im gonna go burn a copy of this game or cd.. HYPOCRITES.. people act like they are holyer than thou because they dont steal apps ..but im sure they steal other things ...cds songs movies games.. and people that jailbreak saying they dont steal apps .. do any of you have PDAnet.. and if so fine but when att comes out with a 30$ a month tethering plan are you going to drop pdanet and go Legit with ATT ....I dont think so ..as i said before no one is better or worse of a person for stealing apps

I agree that hypocrites are annoying. But I offer myself as an exception to your 'everyone' rule. I own every song in my posession. I even ask a good friend of mine to not burn movies for me.

Now I'm not perfect, nor will I ever be. But I really do make a deliberate effort to do the right thing, admittedly not always successful.

Meh i dont care about it. I dont think there is anything wrong with using cracked apps. i only use cracked apps to try them out. then if i think they are reallllyyyy worth it ill buy it. but most cracked apps i download i only use once and never use again. thats why i dont buy them. reviews dont do it for me

this kinda goes for music. 30 sec samples are not enough for me to tell if i like a song or not. so i download them from torrents, listen to them, delete them if i dont like them, or keep them if they are ok. and if i really like them and they just blow me away i will buy the album. i dont think there is anything wrong with that.

I tried a few cracked apps when I first got my iPhone, but a little while later an attack of ethics caught up with me and I deleted them. The legitimate apps are cheap enough for me to try most of the ones I want without breaking the bank.

there may be a FEW and i mean limited few ..but with napster starting it .. limewire .. soul seek and other free mp3 download sites Im thinking EVERYONE has downloaded music at somepoint .

Too much (now-deleted) childish bickering and name-calling in this thread as well as direct discussion of topics that we ask you not to discuss, as per the forum rules.

Any thread that needs this much time and attention from a group of mods is a candidate for closure.
