So it appears that even M1 actually supports AV1 and VP9 decode according to Asahi Linux developer Eileen Yoon.

We have to wonder if something is wrong with the implementation since it isn't exposed in macOS.

Uh not really if you read the article you linked. It means some versions support AV1, not the one in M1, and probably not the one in M2.
