Apple has been so focused on its phones that it is neglecting its software. Any major updates on the horizon for Keynote, Pages, iMovie, Numbers, GarageBand and iBooks ? Are these obsolete in the business and educational markets?

Apple does not discuss, or dissiminate any information about future product updates, and there's really not much interest in rumors about this stuff for another reason.

Apple has a long history of letting its app whither on the vine and not update them for significant periods of time, as such there's little interest for rumors. Personally, I'd look to other solutions such as MS Office.

Check the Apps in Finder:
e.g. Numbers, Pages & Keynote were updated 2nd November 2017 & Modified 10th November 2017. They work well.

Recovering 25 year old documents from a format that's no longer supported is Not fun.
I've had to drag my Mac Plus out of the attic.
If you have stuff that may be needed years down the line, try to take care of the formatting now.
I'm currently betting on Libre Office (ODF).
Other than saving old Macs, and the software that runs on them, Apple has not proven reliable in terms of document longevity.
