Finally, some good pictures of Apple's SSD caddy.
Thank you.

I made one for MP 3.1, not so nice as Apple's but works great.
BTW, Mushkin Chronos 240GB is in caddy now :D

^^ And one for $12.99 at NewEgg.... looks like it would breath better

I went with the one from OWC, since it was the most open - and best price I found in that style

I really wish someone was making a 2.5" OEM style carrier for the 2006/7
OWC has one that's OEM style, but 2009/10 only.

Such a simple thing to manufacture.... surprised nobody is doing it.

I like the looks of the one Amethyst has, but I would have heat concerns over the long term... as I would with ANY that enclose the drive and limit heat dissipation ......

@Bax2003 should be selling those brackets for $12.00 Shipped ;)
Maybe I should set up and knock out a couple hundred of em for the 2006/7 !

That adapter is lovely!

I just mounted my SSD with the included 3.5" adapter, bought a 3.5-5.25" adapter (cost about £2), and securely mounted it in the unused ODD bay, works really well, and doesn't take up an HDD slot :)

May I ask a question? Is the Apple SSD Sata II or Sata III? If its II would you see apple quietly revise it to Sata III if the speculation for the 6.1 Mac Pro Having Sata III comes to happen?

I'm pretty sure it SATA2.

The new machine will certainly be SATA3

The carriers will also be 2.5/3.5 compatible... easy enough to do to fit either or

Not really in to paying $40 just for an adapter bracket.... seems like price gouging to me.

This is what I mean:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MMP35T25/

I's just a 2.5" Drive 'version' of the standard carrier....
And looks to be very well made - machined or forged... very nice.
And it's only $20 - sweeeeeeeeet. It's perfect.

But they didn't bother to make one for the 2006/7's - Boooooo

Hi Guys

Where can I buy just the original Apple Caddy to house an SSD, I have a spare Apple Original 512Gb SSD which I am taking out of my Mac Book Pro and will use it in my Mac Pro, I just need to pick up the Apple Aluminum caddy only.

Thanks for the reply, I am specifically looking for the Apple mount, with 512 in the anodized aluminium.

It was listed here recently but I cant find the tread despite searching.

What is it that prevents this sled from working in a 2008 (or earlier) Mac Pro?

used the 'caddy' part from a WD velociraptor to mount an SSD in one of the original bays. If I replaced the whole thing with the OWC bay, i'd only loose the original or something :/

Just ordered Intel 520 240GB from Newegg (currently priced at $229, best I found) which includes 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. As a Mac Pro newbie, should that be all I need to install it? The Mac Pro will arrive today...

Maybe / maybe not. I had two of them from SSDs that didn't work because they were designed to be held on the sides where as the apple sleds mount the hard drive to the "bottom". So maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't end up needing to purchase another converter

OWC has them, if I do. Hopefully not and I'll be able to get it running this weekend.

Many here lay the SSD in the optical bay, if you have an empty bay.

See

http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-InstallingSSD.html

Anyway, to mount in the sled you need a different adapter than the one typically provided by the drive vendor, the drive connector needs to be lined up with the backplane. Some of the ones in this thread will work.

To hard mount in the optical bay, you need a larger 5 1/4 inch adapter, also sold by OWC.
