Apple SSD or...

If end goal is to have a late 2012 MM with 1 ssd and 1 hdd, is it a better ideal to take the stock hdd and buy/add an ssd OR better to take the upgrade BTO Apple ssd and buy/add an hdd?

Seems the upgrade price for BTO 256 ssd isn't bad. Then just order a higher 7200rpm hdd and the data doubler.
 
I was able to save 100 dollars by doing it myself. You'll need to price it yourself as the price of the SSDs go up and down with time.

There is always the risk of breaking something if you diy. But diy also brings great satisfaction and a greater understanding of what is a fusion drive. You'll need to weigh those factors and then make your decision.

But the fusion drive is working great. I am very impressed with how fast it is. I will never have another system without one.

I elected to go with the Apple 256 GB SSD (+$300 USD) and then added my own WD 1TB HDD for storage. My main reason for doing so is that I lacked the confidence to re-install the operating system on a new SSD (this is my first Mac after using Windows for well over 20 years), and was willing to spend extra to avoid potential headaches and drama. Adding the 1 TB HDD was very straight-forward using the OWC kit. After installing the HDD, the Mac immediately recognized it and we were off to the races!

I know I could have saved money by doing what most folks do (Apple HDD, add your own SSD, move OS to SSD), but in the end got the same thing and kept myself out of trouble. Good luck!

use carbon copy clone or super duper to copy over your internal hd to ssd, that will copy over osx to ssd, how hard is that ?
