Apple (accidentally) sold me the old AirPods with model number A1523/A1722 when I chose to go with wired charging case.

This is probably just a mistake this particular store made - will be going into the store to check with them tomorrow.

Edit: I was charged $219 CAD - which is supposed to be the price of the new AirPods with H1 chips.

It seems a bit sketchy that Apple is still selling the old AirPods with model number A1523/A1722 when people buy choose to go with wired charging case.

I hope this is a mistake this particular store made - will be going into the store to check with them tomorrow.

100% this was a mistake. They made this stuff way to similar.

That a good point. Did they drop the price of the first gens? Otherwise they would have to change the price when scanning. That seems like it should be a red flag for the sales staff. That said, there is no way apple would intentionally do this. They are subject to too much scrutiny to pull it off. Now on an employee level. Totally possible. Although, I don’t know what the benefit would be.

I think Gen1 AirPods can only be bought from other resellers at a discount.

Apple is only selling the new ones.

I updated the photos to show the price and the serial number.

Makes sense that the SKU is still in their POS system for return purposes since the Gen 2 model has been out for less than 2 weeks so far. This mistake sounds like a stocking error.

Apple can technically still sell the first generation Airpods if they still have them in their stock inventory but should be sold at a discounted price. I know they did this for the iPhone X when they released the XS and XS Max.

I believe The Apple Store does this within the first week of a new product release. They're also sold at a discount. Whatever is left over from the previous generation stock is no longer available for sale after that.

That would depend on the store. Usually they can go longer unless Apple Headquarter requests them to be shipped back.

Apple didn’t discount the old ones so the price is the same, hence the mistake. On top of that, the name of the item and the box are almost the same.
