Does the actual apple stores give education discounts (I'm in college), or is it just the online apple store that does that?

The physical stores do if you have a valid student ID, or a printed schedule of your current classes.

Also, you only get discounts on hardware in the brick-and-mortar Apple stores. If you want the discount on software, you must order it online.
