A relative mistakenly bought me an Apple Store eGift card for Christmas, rather than the App Store variety. Given the similarity of “App Store” and “Apple Store”, it’s not such a surprise that this happened.

Apparently, one cannot use a card for one store on the other. And, although the Apple Store presents the option to use a gift card when buying an App Store gift card, it won’t actually accept it as payment:

I’ve tried Apple support, but the iTunes store team can’t help, despite initially saying they could, and the Apple store support team are off on holiday.

Without bothering the person who was kind enough to send me the gift, is there a way of resolving this?

Cheers all!

You're probably stuck with what you have as those gift cards are non refundable. Just save it and use it the next time you need something from your local Apple Store or the on line Apple Store. Or, you can sell the card for cash but will likely have to sell it for less than the face value. Lots of folks sell their gift cards here on MacRumors or elsewhere.

The next time could be - oh I don’t know - in June, say. Strange time to pick up a Christmas present.

Seriously, there’s nothing I want from the Apple store now.

You can either go to a physical Apple store (they will let you buy iTunes gift cards with a store gift card), or try calling and asking them to convert the gift card (see second posting in this thread on the Apple support forum):

I tried Apple’s online chat support and they suggested I phone the support number. So I did that and they said the purchaser has to deal with this for “security reasons”.
