I stopped in at an Apple Store today and when an employee asked me how he could help, I asked him if they had any minis in stock that had the Fusion Drive. I know it's not a stock configuration, and I'll probably end up ordering one, but I just wanted to check since at times the stores have carried upgraded models of the various computers.

So I asked him, and he said "let's go find out" which I took to mean he would ask someone or check some stock or something. Instead, he went to a display MBP, pulled up the Apple site, went to the store, then to the mini, and said "no, we don't - actually, you cannot get a mini with a fusion drive."

"Yes you can."

"No you can't. See - it only comes with two internal drives." He points at the screen. I see he has the server model pulled up. I navigate to the configuration screen for the mid-level mini and point to the Fusion Drive option. He says "oh, you can. But we don't have any."

I just said thanks and kept browsing because I'm not 100% committed to even getting one and he was perfectly nice about the whole thing, but it just seemed a little disappointing that he didn't know you can put a Fusion Drive in a mini.

My sister works for Apple and she says that they've been kind of relaxing their standards for in-store expertise.

I got mine at Best Buy, primarily because the "Apple guy" knew pretty much everything I did about the product and gave me some good recommendations regarding SSD and RAM upgrades. They don't work on commission either, and their protection plan covers accidental damage whereas Apple Care doesn't.

I tend to do my research online. I often decline assistance from sales staff at most places I shop, not just the Apple Store. I find that I already know more about the items I'm interested in, than they do.

I was in a similar situation few weeks ago, wanted a 1tb fusion and either 2.3 or 2.6ghz. Went to my local Apple store (Manchester, UK), but they only sold stock configurations. I've bought upgraded stuff from there in the past, my 2011 MBA for example.

Anyway, my 2.6ghz, 1th fusion Mini is due in the post tomorrow :). I've got 16gb of Crucial waiting in readiness, can't wait!
