I need to get a "repair estimate" for fixing (aka swapping out) my iPhone 4S's broken lock/sleep button.

Back story: a few weeks ago my lock/sleep button suddenly stopped working. Completely stuck, won't function. Turns out it's a very common hardware problem. I am 5 months past my 1yr warranty. Fortunately I had made the purchase on my Visa, and confirmed today that it would be covered under the extended warranty protection (which gives me an extra year warranty). Once Visa approves the claim, I pay out of pocket and then they reimburse me. I have to submit a repair estimate / diagnostic from the Apple store first, though, showing what the malfunction is and how much a repair / swap will be.

So, could the Genius Bar provide this by just verifying the physical existence of the hardware problem, or will they need to plug it in and run a more thorough diagnostic on it? If so, how strict are they about jailbroken devices? Will they flag my account or deny services since technically I have breached the user agreement?

I don't mind doing a full restore if I have to, but would prefer not to deal with the hassle if I don't.

Thanks!!

Always restore before taking it back to the apple store for help, this way you have nothing to worry about.

Better to be safe than sorry!!!

Okay sounds like the verdict is unanimous. Thanks for your advice. Will restore it tonight.

I would honestly just use it without a working S/W button and not go through the hassle of restoring
