Hi everyone,
I have been having alot of problems with my MBP lately and I believe I have isolated it down to the HD. Lots of files have become curropt, I can not copy things to other drives due to I/O errors, and I ran TechTools Deluxe and it found over 400 bad sectors.

I am planing on taking it to the Apple store later today. Since the SMART status is still verified, will they have any problems replaceing the drive?

Assuming I can convince them to replace my dying drive, how long should this take? Can they do HD upgrades in the store, or do they have to ship the computer out?

they can most likely do it in the store. that is if they believe that to be a problem. they will first diagnose the issue, and if it is the HD, that doesnt take very long to replace. but if it is something else it might take a day or two. as long as it is in warranty, it will be fine.

Thanks. How can I easily prove that their is a problem?

I have dozens of corrupt files that I found when copying to an external drive. Will they run TechTools and see all of the bad sectors, or should I print out the report for them?

The smart status is verified right now, so thats not really going to help me prove that its broken. Hopefully they should know that smart status isnt really that accurate though.

Also, should I take out the third part ram I put in? Ive read stories of ram disappearing when getting sent to apple.

If there is some decent disk analysis software for Mac (like Sandra for Windows) then that will make it easier, that's what I used to prove a problem to Evesham (A UK PC manufacturer) when I had HD problems.

You don't necessarily have a dying harddrive. You could have Btree error which is software related. If you do have a Btree error, you just have to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

My laptop's drive failed and I am having it replaced and the Genius Bar said to expect a 4-5 day wait time to have mine repaired. I'm at day 4 and they just started the repair yesterday.

i had my HD replaced recently at the Apple store due to a persistant clicking noise. The process took about 5 business days, but I also had the logic board replaced at the same time. They basically had to order all of the parts while the computer just sat there. Once the parts arrived, I received the unit back the same day.

If they have the part you need in stock, and they're not too backed up w/repairs, you could get it back several days sooner.
