The Grand opening is Saturday the 14th. They are giving away 1000 shirts, and they also are giving away a black Macbook, ipod nano, hi-fi and a bunch of software.

I was wondering if anybody knew how long it takes the store to get back to ya on whether you have won or not. The store is in Birmingham, so I guess I have to start paying sales tax on Apple products now :(

Yeah, I'm only two hours away but I've promised my son we would go on his scout campout. My daughter wants to go so bad!

One of our own won a Powerbook at a grand opening a few years ago. She picked it up the day she won - she stuck around for the drawings.

Anyone else going?

Oh heck yes, does anyone know where it is in Bham? Mall? Link? I was hoping this day will come. I don't know if there will ever be one in Huntsville. Leonard is building a huge new building for Mac Resource. That would sure suck for him.

The new Apple Store is located in The Summit mall (off highway 280) where Eddie Bauer used to be (right next to Parisian's). If they purchased all the floor space that used to belong to Eddie Bauer, it should be a very large store. I can't wait to see it!

(note: I'm from Birmingham, but since I live in STL now, I won't be able to go :()

OH yea hot and fresh! 7 am on saturday? Wow that is hard core! Do you really think you need to get there that early?

It's hard to say. Some of the previous threads on MR detailing the new store experience have people arriving at 5 am, or even midnight. It would be fun to be first in line!

Do you know this area? Is it an outside entrance? There's a chance of rain, so I'm wondering how to prepare for the elements.

Yea I was at the summit in January, and the Eddie Bauer store was kinda tucked back in a corner, outside entrance. Pretty nice size store like previously posted. As for the interest in Alabama in general, I see very few apple computers, but Birmingham could be completely different.

In my opinion 8 a.m. should be OK, but get there earlier if you want. I have a friend that is going to be working there, and it's about time to get that friendship going again. (discounts:D )

Anyway it shuld be fun, will be raining though, and the parking lot is kinda far away too, for people that care. So you will be outside until the doors open.

Here at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, it's not uncommon to see more Macbooks than Dells in the library coffee shop. So it's probably a matter of hot spots around the state. But I know of at least 20 people who have been vocally complaining about the lack of an Apple store nearby for years. (Memphis and Atlanta are just too far...).

Yeah that's true I have a friend that goes to ITT and he says that many of the shops have people with Macs. Here in Montgomery (Faulkner University), its a different story. We just aren't very cool down here. I dunno it will be interesting to see how many people show up, and how many from macrumors will be there as well.

Most mac folks don't bring their stuff out like that. I don't like taking a census on who owns what by coffee shops. Most of those folks are douchebags anyway!:D I sport my love by giving away macs I fix.

Sorry for the rant but I shall be there. Look for the red head in his early 20's with a star trek or waynes world shirt (I havent decided).

I probably won't be there until about 1:30 or 2, but plenty of time for the sweepstakes thing. My girlfriend is actually really excited, but we are both kinda bummed about the t-shirt thing (we'll be late) Guess we'll have to eat at the cheesecake factory as well

Well poo. If the little woman didn't have to work this morning and I didn't have so much to do we'd be up there too. iSaint needs to get some good pictures for us. ;)

I can't believe I didn't meet any MR peeps! It was so much fun! My wife even got into it. The Genius appointment was met on time. We sent off our iBook for a logic board repair. $280 plus tax will fix it, he says. My son wanted some colored earbuds, and I bought some more iKlean. No major purchases for us today. I saw one guy hugging his MacBook box while his girlfriend/wife took his picture.

There was no cash register or checkout line. To buy something, you simply grab an associate. They carry an Apple bag with a handheld cash register of sorts (I'm sure there's a proper name for it) and Apple bags. They ring you up right there! You big city folks are used to this, I'm sure. :p

Oh...and, I asked one associate if they were going to put an iPhone on display. She quickly answered that they wouldn't be on display until they came out in late June.

Here's my flickr page with more pics. Enjoy!

Glad to have an outlet for the Mac fanatics

The store has welcomed old and new. Birmingham can breathe a sigh of relief. Help has arrived. For those that endured the overcast morning, and some a brief night, the wait was worth watching the entire entourage of apple techs going wild amid the anticipation. T-shirts in an origami box fit the mood well. I enjoyed being one of the first thirty allowed entrance. This was my fourth opening to witness for Apple, and, the most unique. Why? Because there were oodles of converts itching to become a full fledge Mac user. Now, they had a store that provided therapy in the manner of service, access and intellect. And, the rain held out beyond expectations. Kudos to the Apple team for providing the much needed distractions once again. I salute the ever growing Apple Army. (Even one fan driving by in a pickup truck passing the waiting line began chanting out his window, "APPLE!! APPLE!!! APPLE!!!") Congrats on a well organized event Apple. Worth every moment.
