Is this the sign that Lion is going to be released today?

I've long thought Apple kind of sucks at Internet services. Having to regularly close the store adds to my impression they don't have mastery over the Internet. Can you imagine if Amazon had maintenance downtime or needed to shut down when they add a new product? And after Apple's keynotes, they take a couple of days to finally update all of their static product pages.

Lion will be on the App Store, that doesn't affect the Apple Store. Best-case scenario: Since Apple isn't releasing MacBook Airs (or any new Mac) before Lion, and since the Apple Store is down, maybe they are releasing new Macs now, which means Lion has to get released now too.

EVERY Saturday night/Sunday morning this happens and EVERY time we get posts saying "Apple Store is down!!!!" with speculation and nothing happens.

The store regularly goes down Sunday morning for maintenance.

They do not close anything, they just make it seem so. It's merely a way to create anticipation :)

Exactly!

Besides, when was the last time Apple has released something on a Sunday? Pretty much never in the entire history of Apple. Saturday launches for big products (like the iPhone or iPad) are one thing, but even the pre-orders for those usually go up on a Tuesday or some other weekday.

If this was midnight PST on a Tuesday (or any other week day really), I would be a little more suspect of them introducing something new, otherwise it's just a bunch of people paying way too much attention to the Apple store maintenance cycle.

Are you kidding? Apple knows exactly what they're doing. Every time they close the store, millions of geeks go buzzing about what could possibly happening. It's an enormously effective marketing tool.

It actually only takes a couple of hours, and this is a technical issue because they use Akamai. The reason it happens is because Akamai actually caches these pages on thousands of servers all over the world to provide a more speedy website experience. The downside is it can take a little while before everything is updated.
