Hey all,

Just got back from my first visit to NYC, and wanted to visit the Apple Store on 5th, the one with the iconic "glass cube" as the entrance.
However, when I got there (at 2AM), I noticed it was under construction (pics below).

I chatted with one of the Apple Retail Store employees and the employee replied when I asked "What's going on up there?":
"We don't even know man...They didn't tell us anything. All we know is the construction is expected to last 2 months, and it's going to be a 'big surprise' when completed."

What really jumped out to me was the duration of the construction. 2 months from now would mean sometime in late September, or early October. I doubt Apple would do major construction without having a big announcement to intersect.

Let the speculation begin.

My personal prediction is an "app checkerboard" type cube that is almost stained-glass in nature, with interchangeable app icons they can swap out with popular apps as time goes on.

What is your prediction?

Cool :)

There's an Applestore being build here in Amsterdam. If i don't forget, i'll take some photo's this weekend of the progress being made.

Is it covered on the inside too, so that you can't see anything? I was thinking it was possible they were converting it to a cylinder, similar to the China store. But by the looks of it, that doesn't seem to be happening.

The inside is covered as well

Yes, the inside is covered as well.
I tried to sneak a peek, but could only see the glass staircase, which still existed when I visited.

I should mention the store is still open 24/7 and seems to operate as normal. You'll have to take what seem like an emergency exit staircase to access the store though, and it lets out right next to the Genius Bar.

Since I saw the staircase, I figured the renovation wouldn't involve many structural changes, hence my prediction of interchangeable square app icons covering 5 sides of the cube.

We'll see soon though!

I predict a sphere made of glass and stainless steel debuting to co-incide with the launch of the new iphone or ipad.

If you are only replacing pavers with new ones do you really need to cover the entire area?

The sign says that they're simplifing the cube, saw it this weekend, using 15 giant glass panels instead of 90something?
