My friend took his iPhone to the Apple store since he was having some problems with it. I restored in DFU mode back to 2.2.1 and did not restore anything from backups. He was told his phone was jailbroken and they won't be able to exchange it but will try to fix it in store.

He told them he doesn't know what JB is and have no idea what they are talking about.

is it possible for them to find out?

thanx

Not sure really. I know that it is pure software.

HOWEVER, this next happened to me.

I used the captioncrunch carrier string to make a custom service provider, I think at the time it was my name. The guy looked at it and asked if the phone had been jailbroken (and I had not at this time actually) but then proceeded to go into system prefs and in there, the actual carrier is still listed as Rogers. So dodged a bullet there.

But yeah, my friend who accidentally updated to 2.2.1 jailbreak, also dropped the phone, rendering the home button next to useless. He is having one hell of a hard time entering DFU mode and attempting to get it repaired.
