They wouldn't take my wife's 12 because there were scratches you couldn't even see unless the screen was off and you looked at the right angle. So what happens? Will VZW remove the down payment and change the installment amount, or will Apple charge for the trade in amoun t? If they charge, do they contact you, and ask you how you want to pay it? Thanks. And I'm not sure why they couldn't just take it anyhow but inform you that you would be contacted about a lower trade in amount and let you pay the difference. They weren't answering question well at all because they were overwhelmed. If I didn't have decent knowledge aboue most of what goes on for trading for the new iPhone, I'd be clueless and pissed.

That’s weird, I’m assuming you mean iPhone upgrade program? Because trading in, they don’t care about scratches. Cracked screen now, or “scratches” deep enough to constitute as a crack, is different but even then, they would just charge you the amount to swap the screen out (for iPhone upgrades) or deduct an amount (from the trade in).

either that rep is too new/green/wrong or there’s more to it then the scratch…

No it was a VZW Trade. Problem is I think she was leaving so she just rushed and didn't give us any choices. Couldn't we do a screen AC+ Claim and then trade it in for full price?

In my previous experience AC+ will not do a screen scratch. They won’t replace it unless the screen is totally cracked.

That’s not normal. Apple doesn’t sell used phones, only refurbished that have all the outer parts replaced with new (shell, screen) so a few scuffs on a trade in are of no consequence.

That’s been my experience too. I had a deep scratch in my iPhone XS screen, and I brought it in to replace the screen under AC+. They told me that they don’t do replacements unless it’s cracked. I said “ok, would you like me to crack here in front of you then, or do it outside?” since they will cover the crack for whatever reason it happened. They replaced the scratched screen. 😂

LOL. We actually took it home, dropped it a bunch of times, and brought it back. By then, it wasn’t just a screen replacement (whoops).

That’s horrible and yes, technically but scratches shouldn’t be an issue for trade in, this would be last resort, even if it’s Verizon.

Took a hammer to my 11 Pro last year before selling to get more money from a pristine screen. That policy is so asinine.
It is but it also depends who you run into. I guess I’m lucky… the store I go to (also may or may not know most there still since I used to work there) would allow me to swap out the entire device vs just replacing the screen.

that’s because I only get two and tbh I have no patience for them to go through the entire process vs if they swap out for me it’s in and out in less than 15 mins and it’s the difference of, swap out price vs screen replacement but I don’t mind.

they do try to get me to replace the screen instead but i think it’s to save me $$ and when I say I want to swap out I don’t have any trouble after that (done this a few times).

And this is why I put on a screen protector so there’s no issues to resolve. 👍
I used to use it but I noticed how much brighter my screen was without and, replacing screen is like $29? On AC+. I think most decent screen protectors are just a bit under or around that.

Thanks all. A bunch of repair appointments appeared for today so we took it in. He said he can fix it in like two hours for $29 and it can be used as a trade. Screen protector is coming for her on Tuesday.

What’s also dumb is Apple charges $50 for silicone cases to protect phones they lease in the IUP, but then if the case fails (gets rough edges)due to a fall, Apple won’t replace the case.

I told the rep, if I don’t use a case and the phone falls and the screen breaks it’s going to cost a huge amount for you to fix it. The guy acknowledged it didn’t make sense but they wouldn’t replace the case.

It was the first time I’ve had an experience where I thought Apple wasn’t acting like one company, or has any idea of context in my purchase history with the company.

I had to re-read this several times to make sure I wasn’t misunderstanding.

wow.

It makes no sense. Look at this repair pricing from the Apple website:

Screen replacement costs out of warranty, it is $328 for the iPhone 13 pro max. Presume Apple’s actual cost is 40% of that so $130

In the iPhone Upgrade Program IUP, $29 flat across all models.

That is $100 loss for each screen that breaks.

Now get this, they charge $50 for this silicone case in the first place. Markup must be way higher than the screen but say it’s only 80%. (That’s generous I think these cost almost nothing to make at scale compared to AMOLED 120hz touchscreens.)

Replacement to them is $10. Having their genuine case on the phone the company is themselves going to have to take possession of again would presumably decrease the likelihood that the iPhone won’t break by a great deal, and saves on costly screen replacements during the warranty period.

What bothered me more than their seemingly poorly considered replacement policy of cases for IUP customers was just bad will toward people who buy their expensive cases.

Third parties are making very nice virtually identical silicone Magsafe cases for less than half what apple wants. It is like the company doesn’t care, and it disappointed me.
