I have a macbook and have had it just over, but the battery has shut down on me. It one day didnt want to charge and now it is showing the X sign in the battery bar. I know this is a known problem but will apple replace the battery after the 1 year warranty is over?

-also I have another problem with my other computer. I spoke to apple over the phone to report the problem and they want me to take it into my nearest apple store (Regents St, London) but I really dont want to go in. Does anyone know if they have a system where you can send it off by post to them (I still have the original box), therefore bypassing the apple store?.

Why don't you want to go to the Apple Store? Is it too far or are you afraid? They aren't going to eat you!

You could contact Apple and get them to arrange a pickup for you to get it sent off.

As for the battery, you won't get a replacement now. Batteries are consumables and aren't covered by the warranty. A new MacBook battery will cost you about £70-80.

Not everyone has an Apple Store "nearby," you know. In addition, I would gather that the store in London is very crowded, causing long wait times, frustration, etc.

heyy thanks for your replies.. yeah the store is about 1.5 hours away, and I don't like the fact that you have to book an appointment to see them (with 2 days waiting list)

I think that is a logical way of dealing with it. You get an appointment time, you go in and you get seen at that time (usually). Would you rather stand in queue for ages then get seen?

Mind you, we're British, queuing is something we're good at :p

You cut out the part of the message that said that the store is 1.5 hours away. That's a much bigger deal than having to make an appointment. I wouldn't drive an hour and a half to take a computer in, you tell the Apple people on the phone that it's too far and they should be able to arrange some sort of way to do it via mail.

yeah it is logical, but other shops like john lewis down oxford street are pretty good at with their after care, you don't make an apointment but go in anytime. The most i've waited was 15mins (although at peak times I imagine its muchh longer)....but in some cases like when my battery failed to charge and was left with a dead macbook I really would'nt have wanted to wait 2 days just for them to test out a new battery/or power supply on it, when i could get the problem sorted out on the same day.

I used to work in John Lewis - I know how crammed and busy the aftersales service can get, and how raty the customers can become too. I've been lucky enough to remain as a sales assistant rather than have to play the role in aftersales, but we've seen queues on a Saturday that are 20-30 minutes long. But in saying that, during the week was always quiet.

John Lewis is good for the aftersales service though - more open to possibilities than other retailers since their prime aim is to make the customer happy rather than make as much profit as possible.

I know I cut out the bit about the 1.5 hour drive? What's your point? I was making comment about how he doesn't like the idea of making an appointment. Read the quote next time!

haha me too, only for 2 summers tho when I was at uni! I love the customer service there, and its much more understanding than other stores. Some guy in the que infront of me bought 30k (well the company he worked for did) worth of stuff for a photoshoot, used it, and JL took it back! i thought that was a bit cheeky...

Does anyone have a UK phone number I should use to try and get Apple to swap my Macbook battery out please? It seems to be one of the ones which won't charge again after having been allowed to discharge fully. But on the main Apple support section, I seem to be getting nowhere and either go round in circles or end up with a US phone number.

Thanks.

hey, here is the number if you havnt already got it yet 0870 876 0753..

here is a bit of an update anyways....

I managed to get a new battery (today) from apple for the macbook even though warranty had expired because it is a known problem. But now the macbook has stopped working completely! I was using it and the screen just went black. I held the power button down to switch it off, and turned it back on. The CD drive went a bit crazy and did not want to work. The computer does power up but doesnt make the bing noise and the screen just remains black

.....Any suggestions?
