Less Features than the iphone?
Of course, there are the basic questions of whether the device is capable of doing all of the cool things the iPhone can do. Push notifications? Alerts and badges? Jailbreaking? Tethering? Video out?

I’m not trying to spit in anyone’s hot chocolate here, but after all the hype of a new device and the flash of a new form factor, the sober-minded among us who think critically about parting with $500 must ask ourselves what exactly it is that Apple gave us today. If it was just a hyped up iPhone or a pimped out Kindle, it may be cool, but certainly not revolutionary. Oddly enough, if the iPad had been introduced just a couple of years ago (prior to 2007), it would be the most amazing device ever, but after the iPhone revolution, the iPad simply falls flat for me.

But ultimately, whether the iPad finds its niche between the iPhone and MacBook Pro is up to you. So what do you think?

Nothing special to me. I won't buy one as I think my iPhone does the same if not more given the fact I can make calls on it and take pictures. I would much rather have seen a better, stronger iPhone/os than the ipad. If I'm gonna lug something the size of the ipad around I might aswell just take a full fledged laptop and be able to do everything a computer is supposed to do. What I like about the iPhone is the fact that it's like a mini computer that goes with me everywhere with out having to carry a bag around. I would like that to be expanded on. Anyhow, I think the niche that this thing will find will be very small as I don't really see a huge need, especially in current trim.

I agree to an extent. For people that have an iPhone, this thing has no meaning.

For customers of other carriers it comes down to buying this or an iPod touch. The iPad (ugh... still can't believe Apple is continuing the "iGadget" thing) very well may be a better choice for some people, although I'm almost positive the sales won't even come close to the iPhone or the touch.

You miss the point. This is designed to be a consumer product that hits the sweet spot of most consumers. If I am sitting on my couch watching some tube and want to multitask browsing web, checking email, working on an iLife presentation, organizing photos, this sounds like a lot more convenient than a laptop and certainly easier to read than my tiny iPhone screen.

Unless you are a power user, this will do 99% of what most people do with a computer. I am intrigued by the possible business applications that can be ported to this thing. I'm in the medical field and would love to chart on something like this.

This will bring a lot of new consumers to the Apple fold.

As stated above, approach the market this way:

Do people buy traditional laptops/notebooks because they need to . . . or because they have no other choice?

Well, "netbooks" answered part of that question. Consumer were more than willing to buy a device that had a crappy keyboard, no drives and a small screen, and buy them in bulk. However, nobody has ever called an ASUS eePC, Dell Mini, or Lenovo Ideapad . . "cool."

I'd wager that the vast majority of computers sold worldwide aren't running Adobe CS, Studio Logic, or Final Cut. For the 10% or so that need those, or other mission critical applications, you still have the equipment to run them.

To be honest, if they just added a front-facing camera, I'd be sold.

Yeah, just that one feature. But nope.

Zero interest from me, especially when my iPhone can do everything that thing does.

Doing video iChat is not a deal breaker for me, since I don't even use it on any of my iMacs. As a pad device, who would want to hold it up anyway? Otherwise, when used as a tablet, guess where the camera is going to be pointing?

Funny, there's this case-stand-thingie that's just perfect for video chatting................

I could understand not chatting much on the webcam, but I'm deaf, and having the ability to chat via webcam with a tablet anywhere is a dream came true. There's (clumsy) devices that do this, but I was hoping Apple would blow them all away once and for all with this.

Next revision, perhaps.

If you look at the proportions of the cover/stand . . . the device will still be pointing upwards, the same lousy angle as on most notebooks.

BUT the problem is, you can't Multitask on the iPad at all. You have to leave one application before going to the next (like on the iPhone/iPod touch)

If it could multitask, then the points you raise would make it a very good device and a dream to use.

Shame Apple ! Lets hope iPhone/iPad OS 4.0 will allow multi tasking when it eventually comes out

OP you make some valid points. However I get the feeling this device is going to sell well. Things by Apple these days are in, and people will probably buy this whether they need it or not. Some people are willing to buy Apple products because there cool. Heck, there was some kind of crowd outside the Manhattan 5th Avenue store trying to get in this morning at 7:45 AM. The guard appeared to be holding them back. I got the feeling they were already queuing up for the ipad:D
