About a month ago I decided to take the plunge...got rid of my trusty old PC and replaced it with a new iMac.

A week ago my new iMac's power supply died. So after driving to two different apple stores (one didn't have parts) and standing in line for an hour at each I was told the repair would be complete in 3-5 days. Cool, thanks for having me wait in line just to drop the system off.

I got the system back today and stuck between the lcd and the outer glass was this metal object:

This object scratched up the glass cover and the lcd behind it. The top of the casing is also scratched up from when the techs either moved the system around or laid it down. Unfortunately Apple the customer relations office is closed until Monday.

Maybe Apple will replace the system but they can't make up for the many hours I've wasted dealing with this and related headaches from my 'NEW' iMac.

Be cautious when taking your computers in for repair, obviously some apple geniuses(laugh) are not very thorough.

Take it back in, but before you do (now, in fact), go online to the Apple Store retail site for the Store of your choice and make an appointment with a Genius. It'll save the waiting around bit.

And yes, they should definitely repair/replace that. Just stay cool. It was a stupid thing to get by them, but it wasn't malicious.

You note that it was between the LCD and outer glass--did you remove that yourself?

I'm sure they will be happy to help you out. But on another note, I'm sure it was unintentional. Accidents happen at every company, not just Apple.

But anyway, good luck!

This reinforces my philosophy ......

" Unpack it, fire it up, check it out .... BEFORE .... you take it home. " ( this applies to new purchases as well as repairs. )

Hopefully that piece of metal is something from inside the iMac, or something unique to where it was repaired.

I have to think they will help you out. I know once with a G5 iMac I heard a weird noise inside the fan, it was a screw from somewhere inside the system that vibrated out and worked it's way down the cooling tunnel to the fan.

Oh yeah as stated before ... call and make an appointment with the Genius bar, and take it back to where it was repaired.

I wasn't trying to imply that I thought it was intentional, combined with the nicks on top of the casing, it is just irritating that they hadn't taken better care of my iMac.

O well, I'm sure apple will sort it out... just needed to vent.

i think your right, i have read somewhere that the glass is held onto the system with magenets that are glued to the glass behind that black strip.

looks like it broke from the glass and fell down while they were uninstalling / reinstalling the glass

should try to get a whole new system since it was scratched also..... or fix your glass and give you a nice 23" ACD to use as a secondary monitor :)

You should have left the metal object behind the glass and returned it to Apple exactly as you received it.

I don't doubt they will replace your iMac but you shouldn't give them any opportunity to pass the blame onto you.

Just a heads up. Apple will still require you to pay the 10% restocking fee (or whatever it is) if you return an opened computer, even if it was opened seconds after purchase while still at the Apple Store. Repairs... now that's a different story.

No they will not, that policy is referring to the opening of the retail box and return of a product that is not damaged, since it was damaged while in the hands of Apple, they will/should replace it for free.

Not in the UK though. You have a 14 days return period, when you can return it and get a full refund.
