Should Apple allow you to specify how much on-device space will be dedicated to *local* media?

I'm thrilled we have options for 6TB and 12TB now, which yields 8TB and 14TB storage tiers!

Now Apple, can we finally be able to select on our device, how much local storage will be dedicated to photos and videos? Currently, it;s either totally optimized and no control what is there and what isn't, or, putting everything to the point that if you have more photos and videos than on-device storage available, you become maxed out and can't do anything.

What are your thoughts on solutions to this problem?

I like the simplicity of "optimized storage". However, it obviously does not work all that well. To this end, I would like a dedicated Optimized Storage option in Settings | Apple ID | iCloud (duplicated in General | iPhone Storage), with the following options:
  • No
  • Standard (same as now)
  • Aggressive (only favorites, used in last 30 days, etc. are locally stored)
In addition, more features should utilize Optimized Storage, such as Health, iCloud Drive, Notes, and Voice Memos. I believe only Messages, Music, and Photos have Optimized Storage.

I could go for that, except add a feature where it also has the option to use quite a bit more storage. I bought a 1TB phone and I wanna have things on-device, for traveling, low cell signal, speed, etc.!

Definitely. In addition I really need to be able to mark some apps 'do not offload.' It breaks functionality of the phone at unexpected times.

Have there been any writings on the real-worldbehavior of the optimize algorithms? I have a 64gb phone right now and the library is taking up about 7.5 of that, with about 10Gb free. That free space is because I had to manually offload almost every app of any size in order to install ios 17. I wonder if i get a 128Gb phone if it will just be the same thing with a 72Gb 'optimized' library, or if my largest, most critical but not-often-used apps will stay put for now. This would probably be the biggest reason for me to get a new phone except i'm not confident the thing will change in any meaningful way.
