OK, so if this is out there already feel free to flame me and post liks to the numerous posts I didn't find in my brief search.

I think one benefit that the Apple tablet will have over other tablet devices is that Apple will become a book publisher in the same way that they have become an app publisher. By having a book store onboard that individual authors can submit books to and name their price in the same model as the app store. I think this will include some type of rich media book writing tool that an author can sign up for like an sdk ,for a cost of course, that is simple for an author to use to create this media content.

That would be rather interesting, I must say.

So far it seems that the indications are more that the book side, if integrated through iTunes, would be ran more like the movies and TV shows are. By that I mean that Apple hooks up with networks (analogous to publishers) and the networks decide what content to put on there. However, there could be some room for a sort of 'podcast' type thing, where you don't need to be affiliated with a publisher to put your content out there. That could be incredibly awesome.

It would be damn awesome if they not only sold books but also allowed you to rent them. Like a library, but charge $0.99 for 2 weeks or something like that. Some will buy, some would rent. But damn, that would be it, I wouldn't have to leave iTunes store. . . ever.

It sounds like they will not the real publishers set their prices, so I don't know if rental will be an option early on.

I do like the idea that people could self publish. Could really shake up the publishing industry, and I think a rental option would be great for people who wanted to self publish and/or get their writings out there.

I really think this could be very interesting in bringing all sorts of lesser known and less accomplished publications, books and writers exposure.

I do think it could do something similar to apps for writers.

everyone should have a read of "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" by Walther Benjamin. The amount of crap we have to sift through as it is has already turned the world into ADD frenzy

So, just so I'm following along correctly, we shouldn't allow people to publish stuff outside of an actual publisher because it will make more stuff to look through?

There are so many good independent artists out there, why would we want to miss out on them just because some people will write crap?

If Apple becomes a publisher I hope they have an acceptance policy (ie. no crap books and no books solely on sex). Also if Apple keeps their 70/30 split publishers will be a thing of the past, and I don't think Apple would be in negotiations with companies they will soon destroy.

That is the sweet irony of all this. The book publishers will be jumping on this to save themselves, not realizing they have just sealed their own tomb.
