A nice article that details the tweaks given to the iPhone and how Apple gave some parting shots to Google before erasing their maps data from the iPhone with iOS 6.

"More than 80 percent of our customers are running the latest version of iOS, iOS 5. Now if you compare that to the competition, they released a dairy product, 4.0, about the same time that we released iOS 5. And about 7 percent of Android customers are running the latest version."

Apple also partnered with fifteen providers on Maps, reportedly using Microsoft’s Bing Maps data as well. And in my opinion, Google’s hastily organized presser only underscored its anxiety over Apple entering the mapping space.

The keynote kicked off with a Siri gimmick. She made fun of Google’s Android code-names, saying they must have been created by “Ben and Jerry”. By the way, she also likened Samsung’s new phone to a refrigerator.

Enjoy :)

So stupid and juvenile. Looks like Apple is on the way down if that intro is any indication. And even trying to replace Google Maps with their own in-house mapping is just plain dumb. I hope they lose it big time. And yes, I have owned just all Apple since the Mac Mini first came out and been glad of it, but this may just be a turning point.

Good, about time apple relied less on the competition for things. Maybe one day they won't use physical parts from the competition.

Maps....that's going to be tough even with the purchase of several companies. I used a Tom Tom for a year about 8-10 hours daily minus the weekends and it sucked. It showed railroad tracks through my house that were pulled up to build tanks in ww2. It wasn't till I got an android phone that I realized all gps's didn't suck. I have a Garmin now on the latest version of navteq maps but its still not as good (good enough) as Google maps.

That pie graph is funny.....include Android 3 ie tablet based OS? Regardless, having Gingerbread, Honeycomb and ICS currently there is only ONE app I have that doesn't work on all my devices and that's Google Chrome which is ICS exclusive. Think Siri for the 4S. So I personally don't see this "fragmentation". I could only see it being a problem for a developer maybe but I'm not one so I don't care.

Siri...I like it because you can conversate with it. Ex what's the weather, what about in Boston...that's cool. But where is the basic useful functions that VA can do? Open Facebook, play grand theft auto 3 etc. I think they are a pretty close match but Siri has the advantage of conversation while Google can do more for you in the OS.

But back on topic most of the time Siri takes me to Google for a web search anyway. So have siri make fun of Google then when it can't do a trivial task it takes you to Google for help? Come on....

I think my main gripe is smear campaigns and basically acting like children though. I thought it was dumb when apple did it to PC, when Samsung did and is currently doing with the s3, and now apple again. Shows little class, there is a lot to be said about someone taking the higher road.

A good part of the reason why apps will work on all devices is BECAUSE of the fragmentation. Developers aren't creating for the latest and greatest, but instead choose to stay behind the curve knowing most people won't/ can't upgrade their Android.

As for having the tablet OS listed - why not? I'm sure Apple included the iPads in their numbers for iOS as well.

True, I guess honeycomb should be listed.

But if you look at the graphs they aren't that far off. Problem being the majority of Android isn't the latest version.

Regardless and unlike iOS. Apps that work on the majority, work on Honeycomb and on ICS. So if you based the chart on what apps will run on you'll only have a small sliver for Android. I rooted my tablet and ran an unofficial ics rom even back then everything worked minus a couple device based features. Now that I have the official OTA update everything works.

I think the biggest problem causing fragmentation is manufacture UI. A certain app won't work on a certain phone. That does suck for some but still a problem I've yet to experience. Lucky you can a refund for an app on Google play if that ever happened.

I like Apple and prefer them over all other CEMs, but their aesthetics for the new Maps app are terrible. Especially compared to Google's maps. And not bringing turn-by-turn to i4. Other than that... cool stuff.

While I agree that the article is stupid (and this one by John Gruber is much better), I think Google screwed up on this one. They should have allied with Apple in mobile. Google makes more off of the iPhone than they do Android, so if anyone has anything to lose here, it's Google.

Apple's new Maps are not yet on par with Google's offering. But, that's okay. Apple just entered this space. Google has been it for years.

Drink some more of your Apple kool-aid...

Don't really hate either Apple or Google.

Ok I admit that I chuckled at the Siri burns on Samsung and Android. lol

But considering that the iPhone FINALLY got some basic features like turn-by-turn directions...

And Apple decided to screw most of us particular not have FaceTime 3G for the iPhone 4 or turn-by-turn directions is kinda sad.

Still its good for Apple to ditch Google. Apple shouldn't count on Google considering their rivalry in the tech world.

It is bad when a company has to rely on their competition. I am glad that Apple is doing this. I also would not be surprised if Apple makes its own search engine some day (maybe 5 years down the road). Apple is the most successful company in the world and have more than enough money laying around that can be used to decrease Apple's reliance on its competitors.

It's the other way around.

Why? I see no value in them doing this.

Not many people here enjoy such 'childish' articles!

I'm not so sure about that. Apple's marketing campaigns have always been that childish, and Steve Jobs always belittled the competition whenever possible. The sad thing is that his fans apparently shared his inferiority complex.

Frankly, apple really hasn't had any beef with Google.. Apple is just doing their own thing; laughing at Google behind closed doors. Google hasn't been harassed by apple yet, so its all good and gravy.

Android 4.0 takes a lot more time to role out as it is a real upgrade and not a few features sprinkled on top of the existing release. They rewrote almost every stock application. Also android follows a different development cycle where the development devices like the nexus receive the updates first and are sort of testers and demonstration of the platform. Also android 2.3 gingerbread is far ahead of ios6 anyway.

Exactly. Apple should try to reduce profits by its competitor. Why in God's name would a company want their competitor to make more money off their own products than their competitor's products?

Because corporations can profit from each other's work by cooperating more than they can by warring.

Apple's maps are behind Google's. They are reducing their user experience over some petty vindication.

Its not vindication. Apple won't be able to make as much money selling location, movement, and user demographic information to aggregators and advertisers if the customers can get the same information from Google (google who owns the market and will be able to undercut Apple pricewise).

The best way for Apple to compete is to cut Google out of the equation.... but Apple couldn't do that without offering an alternative, so they bought a mapping company to do just that.

It comes down to Apple trying to avoid slowly being squeezed out of the mobile space and wanting to position themselves as a competitor to Google.

I do not think that that Apple will allow Google Maps on iOS going forward. Not without intense pressure from customers and not without Google granting Apple access to the all the information they collect from each device.

I think the editor for the article you linked (whoever it was) needs to be fired. They obviously forgot to fix the article's title.

It should have changed from "Apple to Google: **** you" to "Fanboyism to logic/civility: **** you."

It must be absolute hell to be an Apple competitor these days. Not only they are making ridiculous amounts of profits, the world loves them and in ADDITION you've got Tim Cook publicly ridiculing you.

I make a point of semi-regularly surfing Apple's website with my restored-to-iPhoneOS-1.1 original iPhone, just to mess with their statistics.

Apple makes plenty of money elsewhere. They are not an advertising firm, they have no need to collect such data. iAds is their first mess up. Ping was another. Let's hope to god this maps thing isn't the next.

The plain fact is, we're getting a lesser product based on Apple's vindication against Google. Apple can provide a better experience through partnership, they should, that'll raise the value on what really brings them money : the devices themselves.

Excellent write up and goodbye Google spyware on my phone. :D

All Google share holders better starting to sell now before Google goes bust from losing their biggest customer (Apple).

Karma for shamelessly stole IOS and called it Android.
