That was written in early March... Anyway, desktop 57xx = mobile 58xx, so it's not impossible but Apple would likely underclock if they use the desktop version (which would mean same as using the mobile version but desktop parts are cheaper)

It's just a rumor, keep that in mind

nvidia just came out with a laptop version of the fermi, which is a more likely choice

I'd rather see a iMac update with some newer ATI-graphics that actually cut it in games. Especially as STEAM is coming and people seems to really like it and gaming becoming bigger on macs. That would be a smart move. At least as an option we could get high end graphics. That'd be sweet!

Actually, my guess is they will! Since Steam has come to the Mac platform, there are a lot of people attracted now to a Mac. So, it would be very stupid not to start using more powerful GPU's.

Gaming does seem to be a rather new focus for Apple, at least they are really developing it on the iPhone OS platform (with Game Center in iPhone OS 4). It would be fantastic if they'd indeed upgrade the GPUs in iMacs to make them more a gaming capable machine... At least give some options to upgrade the GPUs...

Yeah they should! If they did, I wouldn't have to look back at all! I would be able to play my racing-games AND be a happy mac user ;P

I don't think apple will go to the newest gaming cards that just came out. History has shown that they are usually 1 generation behind the new releases because of cost issue or availablity.

Rather I want apple to provide their top end spec for the smaller form factors.
Like the 4850 in the 21.5 and maybe even the i7. So then, let the customer choose which is a better value for the same price.

Well, since the drivers are specifically for Apple, and can take 3-6 months or more and Apple tends to wait for high availability which can take 3 months, Apple tends to fall easily a generation behind.

However, every now and then Apple will include spiffy things before anyone else ... with GPUs this tends to only happen when the new card is a slightly modified die shrink card.

Look at the MacBook Pros, since they landed the Nvidia chip, the chances of one in the iMac are slim, except in the updated education iMac (which likely will look a lot like the plastic MacBook).

Apple likes to switch back and forth with Nvidia and ATI with them swapping desktop and notebooks to keep em both happy, until ATI does another pre-release snafu and gets spanked again or somebody leads Apple astray with another system controller.

Those darned Nvidia 9400m's sort of screwed the normal swaps for awhile.

hahaha, seriously? :D

Those 27 iMac's get extremely hot as it is already. If Apple puts a Fermi card in it, they will melt :D

Fermi is a faillure.

The 5750 is more of a multimedia card. For gaming cards, you should look at the ATI 5850, 5870 and 5970.

57** seems the likely choice, as to when they will update? who knows

this is news to me, as an owner of an i7 - it doesnt get that hot...???

I checked all iMac in the store. When doing very light stuff, the top part of the screen was hot and the air that was coming out of it on the top of the screen was very hot. Now I could only imagine what would happen if I would unleash 5 hours of simulations on a iMac or run large sessions in Logic, it's not going to be pretty.

I'm pretty sure an iMac can't handle a Fermi card. The card is way too hot. ATI is the only choice for the iMac.

i think you arent understanding the concept of a heatsync - or the fact that aluminium is the main component that apple has chosen to use.

the aluminium is meant to get hot. if you look at the internals of the system components, its not very hot at all. i often run it at 800% CPU and its fine.

The air that came out of it was very hot too so something was hot inside aswell. My major concern was also that the panel could be damaged over time when the top part of the screen gets so hot. I didn't really see it as a machine that will last long if you're doing heavy duty work on it which is why I haven't bought one.

But we'll see what Apple will do. It's only going to get hotter if they stick a Fermi card in it.

you worry too much. ALL the components inside my computer are WELL within spec. there are 3 massive fans inside the 27", cooling works wonderfully. the air going into the iMac (from the bottom) is cool, and the air going out is hot.

under 800% CPU load, the CPU never gets above 60°C. the GPU stays very cool as well.

Ok, I'll wait and see. I'm looking at what is going to happen with the Mac Pro. I do like the 27 inch IPS panel that the iMac has which is going to cost alot if I want to have something similiar with a Mac pro :(

Maybe I'll get an iMac if I don't like the new Mac Pro. ( if the temperatures are no problem on the iMac )

i can assure you, you have nothing to worry about regarding temperatures :D

had you considered a 27" C2D iMac + MacPro without display lol? i will probably go down that route in a few years, use my current imac as a screen for future computers :D
