Apple has obtained the rights to offer ready-made ringtones for the iPhone and managers are trying to have them available in time for next week's press conference, music industry sources told CNET News.

Owners of Apple's iPhone have long had the ability to create custom-made ringtones for their devices. The new music snippets are mainly a convenience, as they make it possible for iPhone owners to obtain a pre-cut ringtone instead of having to create their own.

Thrilling. How about something useful like AVRCP. How about putting the screws on ATT to flip the "switch".

Like I care about this? I take my own music and make ringtones. I don't need someone to make me "ready-made" ringtones. I hope they haven't been taking time away from doing something useful, like making a search feature for the bodies of emails....the list goes on. THIS is NOT on the LIST.

This sounds like what they've always done in a way. Choose a song and have them make the ringtone for you.

Frankly I see little market for this but surely I will be wrong.

Great now we'll have a new section in the iTunes store with 50,000 Oldie Time Phone RingTones some 10 yo made in garage band.

Ahh, well said! ;)

Wouldn't this just function within the current ringtone purchase/creation tool?

After selecting create ringtone, the waveform appears. Currently the waveform defaults to 15 seconds starting at the beginning of the track. I'm sure (hoping) that Apple will simply have predefined selections within the current waveform. At that point, users simply "Buy Default" or adjust to make their own.

Like many above, this seems like a waste of resources to me. However, only Apple knows exactly how many ringtones they sell. They also know how many people try to make a ringtone and never purchase because they can't set start and stop points that sound good. Maybe ringtones are a good revenue for them.

Man that's too much speculation. Ringtones, Dailtones, Earthtones who cares, there are plenty of places to get ring tones. The only tone people want to hear now is a tone for a new MMS received.

Jobs should pick up his iphone, blackberry, whatever and give a ringtone to ATT.

Steve's ringtone for NBC is "Give Peace a Chance."

I wonder what he has for AT&T?

The only way i'd be happy is if this included a way to change our text message ring tone to something other than the 5 custom ones!!
