Basically that's the overall message I've got from the WWDC Keynote. Apple is defacto "design house" for the world, they own PMP, smartphones & tablets and make 90% of high-end PC profits. Apple is super successful in any venture they undertake. Their industrial designs are iconic and win multitudes of awards. Jonathan Ive just got knighted. The Apple Stores are part of the culture. Chinese people are rioting over iPhones.

It's an Apple world and we all just live in it.

RIP Microsoft, Intel, Google, Samsung.

Intel manufactures the "advanced" processors used in apple hardware.

Samsung makes displays and SSD that are used in apple hardware.

yeah ok, that's why it took Apple til iOS 6 just to have turn by turn navigation and mail attachments

Guess what - it was better for consumers to have the stable, malware-free iPhone with (X-5) features compared to Android. The latest numbers are the 50% of all smartphones being sold in America are iPhones and most of those are 4Ses.

Difference is the iOS 6 Map uses the actual photos of the cities instead of virtual representations.

That feature is coming to Google Maps very soon along with the ability to download maps. They announced it about a week ago at a dedicated maps event.

I don't really think the 3D flyover feature is very useful though.

Really? Does Android have 3D turn by turn maps?

----------

I'm not talking about total installed base - just the last 2 quarters of sales. iPhone sales are accelerating while Android is tanking.

Yes, android has had turn by turn 3D for YEARS, hell my pocket PC from 2004 had turn by turn voice navigation.

I've had flip phones that had great GPS.

Android isn't going anywhere buddy. I have a iPhone 4s that my employer gave to me as a work phone, and a Samsung android phone that's my personal phone, as far as I can tell, both phones do exactly the same thing, they are both fast, stable and have tons of features I don't use. I prefer my Samsung as it has a proper keyboard.

Apple makes high end PCs? Neat!

Maybe they should make a half decent workstation at some point :D

Difference is everyone knows Google did that event in desperation since they knew what was coming in WWDC.

Perhaps, but they've obviously been collecting the data for much longer than that. They can't just snap their fingers and collect all that data because Apple has decided to get rid of Google Maps.

They were going to release the feature at some point.. Apple probably just hurried it along.

You make me laugh. 2 years old, slow. No GPU Support....lolz. my workstation is a solid 3 to 4 times faster. Ill keep it :).

The Mac Pro as it stands now is not a good workstation for users who need very high performance. It doesn't even support SATA,3@ USB 3, no qaud or even dual GPU. Support

Why do 90% of video pros use Macs? Besides Mac Pros come with 6 or 12 cores. Also you can always put in the highest end nVidia graphics. It's a tower workstation for a reason - open it up and expand!

I'm not a video pro, I deal with simulation software. A mac pro is way to slow for me. And where are you getting that 90 from?

6 or 12 cores of a 2 year old processor, it would slow me doen big time.

You can't just jam a super high end graphics card in a Mac Pro, the PCIE slot wont. Be able to power it, and OSX may not support it.

GPU options are very limited on Mac Pros.

PS: sorry for spelling errors, on a subway. Bumpy lol

You loook at a narrow aspect. Let me open up your mind what you did not count.
Enterprise market is huge. I was a security network engineer and have worked with many companies. Large size of companies have aproximately 10,000 - 50,000 clients per company and those of computers are Windows. Mac? ZERO!!!! This doesn't count the servers. Normally, home users own 2-3 computers. They are may be Mac, PC or others. But Microsoft truely dominates Enterprise market, which Mac has never reached.
Microsoft has been being a truly partner with IBM since this computer industry was baby. Patents that are owned by Microsoft are uncountable.
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/03/microsofts-patent-strategy-against-android/ (Microsoft patent strategy against android) and this http://www.tomshardware.com/news/galaxy-s2-android-patent-sharing,13553.html (Samsung to Pay Microsoft for Every Android Device Sold) Microsoft is after every Android manufacturers such as LG, HTC, Samsung etc.

Tim Cook said Apple sold 172 million in year 2011.

Apple ended 2011 with 315 million cumulative iOS device sales. But, Google said that cumulative Android device sales had reached 300 million, with 850,000 activations per day.

Now, you can see the whole picture of the industry. Microsoft got money from Android devices and it is trying to send out the windows phone. It has not been a huge success so far. But watch out windows 8!!! It is just started.

So far, Microsoft has got money money from untouchable enterprise market, which Microsoft dominate and got the money from every android device because of patents and it is playing with this post pc market. Microsoft is at higher position in many aspects.

I would argue that high end Sony notebooks, for the price, are very competitive against Apple, and Sony as a company innovates just as much as Apple, maybe not to as much commercial success. I would buy the Sony Vaio Z over the MacBook Air.

If anyone has ideas, Microsoft does. It's just that Microsoft has always had pie in the sky ideas that aren't easily brought to market and marketed. Apple actually does less research than other companies, they just seem to be very focused on practical things that can be implemented quickly. But it takes other organizations doing blue skies research for Apple to be able to cherry pick what could be big in the consumer market. It takes Nokia and Ericsson investing in wireless infrastructure and cell phone technology. It takes whoever invented multi-touch to invent that so that Apple can bring it to market.

I have mixed feelings on NASA, but if i weren't for them, we wouldn't have bar codes or DVDs and CDs. Google (research.google.com) and Microsoft (research.microsoft.com) both do interesting stuff (there is of course no research.apple.com). Apple in some ways is a "small" company in its narrow focus on consumer electronics compared to them.

One thing I find interesting is that Nokia has had free, flyover 3D maps for years available for anyone written in HTML 5 (maps.nokia.com) yet you'll never hear about it. But the news is talking about Apple bringing flyover maps to the market. Apple just seems to have a knack from taking what they need and bringing to the market in a big, simple obvious way. I think Apple has been very innovative in the past. To me their last big innovation was the original iPhone. That was big. I still remember the day it was announced. I remember the day the iPod was announced. The iPhone was a much more exciting day. The interface and fluidity and multi-touch of the iPhone was a big deal. So I'm not putting Apple down. I just am saying that I think they are very focused on consumer ideas they can bring to market.
