I don't get the big focus on Apple's stock price. It's not as if Walmart and Apple are in head-to-head competition.

Agreed, its an artificial number that has little bearing. Heck apple can done thing to halve the stock price - issue a stock split, so focusing on the price is silly when there are other more important metrics.

A stock split would halve the stock price but not the market capitalisation, which is the figure being discussed :)

Still, all this dick wagging - who cares, its a multibillion dollar corporation that has little care or compassion for me. Its only motivation is to make money for its owners.

I'm not getting some of this fanboyism - ooh ooh ooh apple has high stock price, or ooh ooh ooh look apple is better then microsoft. In the realm of things, it matter not.

That isn't the point. The REAL point is that years ago, no one would have thought this possible. The other REAL point is that Apple is approaching MS in terms of its market cap, which even a few short years ago was unthinkable.

It's interesting precisely because of the contrast.

I'll counter that point with: So what.

So what if apple eclipses MS in market cap. Its like talking about my neighbor who's making a 100k more then my other neighbor. It really has no impact on us and only fanboys and investors talk about this.

Ok, so people are discussing something that doesn't interest you. Move on to another thread whose subject is more to your liking. I don't care about sports, but I don't go into the threads discussing baseball and football and say, so what? I find it quite fascinating, actually, that a company that, back in the 90's was forecast to go out of business or get bought out by someone else, has risen from the ashes to become a corporate player on par with Walmart and Microsoft. Whether it be Apple or anyone else, the story is impressive.

I'll move on, as threads come and go, I pop in and give my $.02. That's the great thing about forums, we are free to discuss things. So my dissenting opinion does not float your boat - no big deal. Just pass over my posts.

I believe that AAPL is overvalued, as some others do. If that's the case, watch out.

Based on Apple’s current P/E ratio compared to other companies within their industry (Dell, Microsoft, Google, HP, etc) their current valuation is well earned.

When their P/E starts going nuts (like how it went up to 40+ during the iPhone launch) is when you should start worrying.

They’ve been pretty stable for a while.

http://ycharts.com/companies/AAPL/pe_ratio

AAPL P/E (ttm): 23.00
DELL P/E (ttm): 20.59
GOOG P/E (ttm): 27.86
MSFT P/E (ttm): 16.31
HPQ P/E (ttm): 16.04
RIM P/E (ttm): 18.97

I'm not so sure AAPL exceeding MSFT in market cap is going to affect him in any way. Apple will still play in the minority share (I think they are purposefully avoiding that) and MS will dominate the desktop and server world.

You really don't think that matters? The size of the company allows it get better deals on pricing, allows for the company to make better deals on content.

Its very interesting for anyone curious where the market is going.

A company's market cap has no bearing on its purchasing power. Market share would certainly impact purchasing power.
