So I did a trade-in to purchase a new iPad Pro. I’ve decided that I should have gone with a different model (switching to a cell model) and want to return/exchange the version I bought.

Does anyone have any experience with returning an item to Apple after receiving an instant trade in credit? Do you get the money back to your credit card or as an Apple gift card? Apple Customer Support wasn’t very helpful (told me both and wasn’t very sure about it).

Since the model I want is. It in stock and I don’t want to lose my return window, I’m tempted to just return and was curious if I would be locked into Apple with the gift card (not that I won’t find something to buy with it) since there are several other stores in my area that have the model I want available more quickly than Apple.

Thanks for the help!

They'll be able to just transfer over the trade-in value without an issue as long as you're within the return window. I just asked about this the other day. Edit: you seem to have a typo in "Since the model I want is. It in stock" so maybe I'm not understanding your question correctly.

I returned my 2020 iPP with a trade in ahead of the 2021 announcement. Since you had a month between the two I didn’t have the option to ask them to carry it across.

it was a nonissue. They refunded me the purchase price on the iPad and also the trade in credit. I didn’t have to make any calls as it worked as I expected it to.

Be careful who is the trade in partner. If it is a in store trade no worries, but I had very nasty experience trading a MacBook in perfect condition via Phobio. They claimed defects in the screen and reduced the value dramatically. I got it back and found no issues at all.

Remember that when you sent in the old one for trade-in, and it gets approved after inspection, you can't send the new one back anymore. At least that's what the e-mail stated I got this morning (I traded my old 11" Pro for the new one).

Not sure where you are, but there's a trade-in window of at least 2 weeks during which you are supposed to send the old and/or return the new one.

This isn’t true for Apple trade in’s. I was able to return after my trade was processed.
