Now that I've been using my iPad for awhile, I've realized that I don't need my macbook anymore, since the iPad takes the place of a portable computing device on the laptop level. However, I still need a computer to hook my iPad into and for other tasks and am going to get an iMac. I also am going to get a new iPhone to replace my current one. I think that will leave me with the optimal computing set up, iMac, iPad, and iPhone.

iMac: will be used as the base station to sync my iPad and iPhone, use a a printing center, do more intensive tasks such as writing long documents, video editing, heavier web browsing, and other tasks the iPad is just not able to do.

iPad: will be used as my portable device when I travel and as my around the house device. I use it alot on the couch and in bed, and also have it lying around the living room if I need to check something quick. I have brought it with me on vacation and its perfect since most hotels have wifi that I can easily surf the web and do other tasks while in my hotel room at night or use it on a plane. Much lighter and nicer to use than dragging my macbook around with me.

iPhone: will be used as my everyday device when I'm out and about. I bring it everywhere, and many places bringing the iPad would be impracticable.


To me, this is the ideal set up.
 
nice sounding setup, but I would probably ditch my iPad if I got the new iPhone.

Not likely as I have a work issued cell phone. :(
 
I agree that could be a perfect trifecta for many people. I will still need all my numerous computers I have at my house. Between my wife, two kids, Windows server, windows laptops, Linux laptop, appleTV, Mac Mini, etc., I need everything, but I will not give up my MBP, iPad, iPhone setup. :)
 
To OP.

Yep that is my set up also, well it will be when I get the iPhone 4. I find the iMac as the main unit is the ideal situation it holds all the stuff I can use air video for and with drop box and air sharing it is as if I am taking my whole world out the door with me when I leave the house.

(well whole online world that is)
 
That's going to be my setup for awhile. My iMac will stay perfect for 5 years or so. I'm not getting an iPhone 4, but my dad and brother are both upgrading from their 3GS's, so I'm getting an iPhone.

The iPad opens so many possibilities. I hope you enjoy all your new devices.
 
I was thinking maybe a mac mini instead of iMac as then i could get it with a normal hard drive and use it with my HDTV as a media centre/mac. Then when SSDs get cheaper it would be easier to upgrade to a 256GB SSD.
 
That does indeed sound like a great setup. If I weren't in college id do the same thing, but still being as mobile as I am I need to hold on to my MacBook.
 
iMac-iPad-iPhone is a nice setup indeed. I've been thinking of that as well, however, for my purpose the iPad is not even close to replacing a full computer experience while on the go. So I still need an MBP. With the external drives and an ACD attached to it (when needed), my MBP-iPad-iPhone is a mobile version of your setup.

I was thinking about that, but to me its just too annoying to control the mac mini from the tv, as opposed to having a computer on a desk that I can sit down and work on easily. Also, I want to use a printer with it, and have my docks for my iPad and iPhone, which you could have sitting on your media center, but I like things less cluttered.

Yeah, for people that really need a full computing experience on the road, your MBP instead of a iMac probably is better. But I'd imagine the majority of people can get by with only an iPad while traveling.
 
I think as iPad and iOS matures as a platform, and the Apps get more capable, more people can start to phase out the laptop for most needs. For me, I still see no real solution for web development on the iPad. Gusto, for example, can do some basic FTP'ing and code editing, but is really buggy at the moment. I don't think I would need to do anything major, but knowing that I CAN do something would be a big step.
 
How old is your Macbook? Is it a Mac book pro? When my last iMac died, I could not really consider a new one because the newest glossy monitors or horrible for photo editing. So I got a 30 inch cinema monitor and hooked that up to my Mac book pro. This is now my desk top set and it works really well. You might want to consider this option if your MB is in good shape. I also then bought a new MBP and use that probaly the most. The iPad is still too limited to for me to take the place of a laptop for my needs.

I'm pretty thrifty by nature though, still have a 1st G iPhone :)!

My macbook is an original macbook from 2006, so its quite out of date by now, although I find it still works fairly well for 90% of the things I want to use it for.

I like the idea of the simple all in one iMac as opposed to hooking my notebook up to a display. Also, a 30 inch cinema display costs $1800!! That's $600 more than the low end iMac I want to buy.

I got mine refurbished.... but I understand. Everyone has there own needs. I probably would have bought a new iMac had it not been for the useless screen.
 
I'm close to your trifecta: iMac, iPad, and Touch. My plan is to get the new iPhone though, so all will be good soon. My only disappointment is that iPhone 4 doesn't have a 64 GB model. My music collection doesn't fit on the 32. :(
 
I have the Mac mini, iPad, iPhone 2G setup right now. To be honest the iPhone hardly gets used besides text, phone calls, and music because everything else feels like it's moving in slow motion compared to the iPad. Should be interesting when I get the iPhone 4 this summer. It will match the iPad in speed and I'm guessing my iPhone usage will go back up. As of now I plan on having all three but my cousin seems convinced I do not need all three and would love to take my iPad off my hands once I get the iPhone 4.
