I purchased an APPLE TV about a year and half ago. I purchase apple care with it and was very happy with it. When the new APPLE TV 2 came out. I had no desire to purchase it. My APPLE TV worked fine. In reading about the new APPLETV2 it does not store media on it and only streams contents from an imac itunes. So if you are restarting that imac your apple TV goes down as well.

From reading posts on Apple own support pages. It was my opinion that users did not want streaming content but the storage of media on the APPLE TV

With the latest update for ipads, ipods and iphones it says that it will link to APPLE TV. I called Apple for tech support and was told they would no longer support APPLE TV. I asked if it was a hardware issues. The tech said no APPLE is SIMPLY not going to allow any updates for the original APPLETVs.

Has APPLE gone insane? I can understand if there is hardware issue preventing these additional features, That it simply not possible for work arounds. But to stop updates or new features via software to force sales of a product that does not in my opinion reflect the needs of it users. That is insane? I guess since Steve jobs is on medical leave, I might as well give up on APPLE doing anything that is sane?

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

The reason AppleTV 1 will no longer be updated is because it runs a completely different OS to ATV2 on a completely different architecture, and Apple have determined it is not economically viable to maintain updates for it.
It still continues to work as it always has and Apple never promised AirPlay on ATV1 so i don't see that they've done anything wrong.
