apple tv 1st gen alpine password problem

hi, im trying to sftp into my 1st gen apple tv and the alpine password will not work. Ive done it before which is the strange thing.

Ive tried the ip address and root@appletv.local and neither works.
Im using cyberduck and ive tried it via terminal and im not getting anywhere. I have factory restored my apple tv and still no joy.

Is there anyway of resetting the password or something?
