So I’ve been looking around this forum for a bit about upgrading these old Apple TVs, and since I still use my 1st gen on an almost daily basis I think it’s time to upgrade it a bit since the 160gb drive is full and I have to keep overwriting stuff. I still plan on using Apple TV software as it’s OS

There’s a couple of questions that I have about this though,

1. I’ve read on a forum somewhere here that somebody was able to put dual drives inside their 1st gen using 2 adapters, is there such thing as a ide to dual msata or m.2 nvme adapter?

2. I’ve heard about those CrystalHD cards that allow you to play 1080p video in place of your WiFi card, is it possible to use those cards with the ATV software or do you need a third party OS for it to work?

To #1, the best I recall seeing from the days when I had gen 1 was 2TB, and I believe that was as one drive. So I know that if you can gather the hack (software to make it work), you can go from 160GB to 2TB. I don't recall seeing anything about using 2+ drives but I might have only missed that. A free app called AtvCloner can make the process fairly easy.

I recall CrystalHD but don't remember the absolute use details. I believe you have to use a different UI. XBMC was the one from the early days. XBMC is now known as Kodi. I doubt any modern UI is still supporting this, so you'll likely have to find versions from back in time to maybe get something working.

To both questions (and then some), you might want to give this thread a pass too.

It is well beyond that time and all of that is fading fast. You might want to redirect such thinking towards something that works with modern hardware... like maybe a Mac Mini or Mac Mini-like PC running something like PLEX as the UI.
