iTunes Sync Pop-Up

You also get a pop-up window on the tv when tv is syncing with iTunes. Another new feature. (At least I think it's new...)

What does standby mode include? Were changes made to alter the current standby mode (by hopefully adding true "sleep" functionality), or is it simply an automatic timeout option for the standby mode in its current state?

are they ever going to bring back the ability to stream photos?

I've never lost the ability to stream photos...
Add the computer's shared iTunes library under Settings->Computers
Make sure sharing of photos is activated in iTunes when the AppleTV appears (click on the AppleTV under "Devices")
Look for Shared Photos under "Photos" on the AppleTV

Works for me - hope this helps!

when using appleTV wirelessly... does it play videos smoothly? does it use a buffer? Or do you all have it set up hard-wired?

I'll update it when I get back the evening.

Anyone knows if it works with iTunes servers such as Firefly?

Dammit. Podcast listings still show "Number of Episodes: 1" for shows you only have ONE file of, rather than how it was with 2.0 where it showed the length and full description.

APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!!! :(

With version 2.0, the AppleTV also used to list TV episodes and tell you which season they were from. Very convenient if you have something like The Simpsons with a ton of seasons. Wish this feature would return also.
Not sure why version 2.1 took away so many great organizational features that had only been added with version 2.0.
Anyone know where these features went?

No Indication of "Partially-Viewed" Shows?

Thought this one was obvious, given that it's been added to iTunes and the iPhone, where I've found it to be most useful!

Why do we not get the semi-circle (half-moon) indicator for shows started but not finished?

Good question, possible Apple does not own/license some patent rights for this HMI and someone filed a lawsuit, therefore it had to be quietly and quickly removed??

Why eles get rid of such an improvement??

Question for all.....

Music Video Playlists; this is fantastic news! :)

I'll be downloading later (can't now), so one question to put me out of my misery, does this also include video playlists for things like TV shows?????
This would make AppleTV damn near perfect in my kids eyes... ;)

???

If only the "standby mode" would turn the darn thing off...

Either that, or add a new feature and call it "deep sleep" or something. I wouldn't mind enabling it and waiting a bit while the :apple:TV starts if it meant reasonable standby consumption.

Any idea if this affects that new mod that allows you to put XBMC/Boxee on your aTV?

yeah, i'd like to know this as well. i will not be around my appletv for a few weeks though...

it would be cool to throw together a playlist of a few shows if you're planning to sit on the couch for a while, or you want something on in the background while you are cooking or doing something else.

Multiple languages support

I don't know if this was possible with the previous version, but I don't think so. The new 2.2 software now also has support for setting a default language for the sound and for the captions (in the setting menu). Now it makes sense to start encoding movies with multiple language tracks. Great new feature for my kids as they like to watch movies in Dutch where I sometimes prefer the same movie in the original language. iTunes and at least the iPod Touch/iPhone has this support build in for a long time, but the :apple:TV was missing this feature.

Apple did not encode their trailers (yet) with multiple languages, so they remain in English.

PS Anybody else think that the Trailer functionality on the :apple:TV could be greatly enhanced (for instance by being able so sort by date like on the site, view only new ones, currently showing (based on country) and upcomming, viewing by genre, etc.)?

Does this update fix the issue I've had since 2.1 where I can't insert spaces when typing a search in YouTube?

When you select search you get a matrix with the alphabet, numbers, and (from memory) space, delete and a couple of others on the bottom line. For some reason, since 2.1, I've been unable to navigate to that bottom line without first starting a video and then going back.

That will sound weird to anyone who's not experienced it, but if you have like me it's seriously annoying.

Fingers crossed. I can't just upgrade to check because I have an SD TV, so have to hack my ATV every time I upgrade to get colour working. Like to know what I'm getting before I put in the couple of hours work required.

I am so sorry i ever bought an AppleTV and then sold it and bought the 160GB to replace it. Navigation in Take 2 really sucks compared to version 1. As far as i am concerned, FrontRow and AppleTV should be identical as far as navigation is conerned. I would have loved to see the iTunes City Screensaver as well... these lackluster updates SUCK. Give me remote desktop via bluetooth keyboard and mouse or something to that effect, add a little more functionality to this thing. DO people actually still buy AppleTVs?

I'm also intersted to XBMC/Boxee on ATV 2.2 ....

Now i'm on 2.1 whitout Patchstich...

What must i do?

Install them with ATV USB CREATOR an then upgrade to 2.2 or just upgrade and the install ATV USB CREATOR?

It Works?

Thanks.....!

It's yet another apple product with loads of potential (not a huge amount of h264 churning cpu grunt though), rediculously let down by being so closed and locked.

It's a great system for xbmc (if you have already bought one). It really puts the front row implementation to shame.

I wouldn't buy one even if the itunes store had any decent quality sources for sale.

on-the-go playlists

personally I love my AppleTV, perfect for my use of a music juke box during parties - anyway playing with the Genius after the update, I've noticed that it's got an on-the-go option as well. i'm sure this is new with this update as it's been something i've been wanting for ages, had I previously missed this?

I'm interested to know if this update will work ok with Boxee and XBMC, I've ordered a ATV yesterday from the Apple Refurb Store. As standard I think it's a fairly poor system but with the addition of some minor hacks it really does offer lots and for a good price. I paid £189 delivered for the 160gb model.

I love my AppleTV. It's a long way from being perfect (i have a very long list of things i'd still like to see), BUT even with all of it's faults it's proved invaluable for me and my family. The kids love it as they have all their content on stream at any time, which is also great for us. It also seamlessly integrates with everything else apple (well, mostly) ;-)
