yeah, i'd like to know this as well. i will not be around my appletv for a few weeks though...

it would be cool to throw together a playlist of a few shows if you're planning to sit on the couch for a while, or you want something on in the background while you are cooking or doing something else.

Just been able to download and check... Nope, just does music videos.. Bugger :(

Only way to get around it is to flag TV shows as music videos, which is really unacceptable, i feel a stroppy email to apple coming on and an entry in the bug reporter :(

How simple would it have been to include? Give me the bloody source code and i'll do it.... :(

I'm looking forward to the on the fly play lists! I can't count the times I just wanted to play a few select songs and had to go through my WHOLE library one song after the other while they were playing.

niggles

my main ATV niggles are these :

1. the remote and the whole response/navigation of the UI is a real PITA.

2. it cant handle higher bitrate h264 (the crappy cpu's fault)

3. it gets very hot when its in standby, why cant the damn thing sleep properly and use less power ??

4. having to hack just to play non-itunes video formats !

5. there's no visualizer ? wt* ?

Bring on the next generation, hopefully a better one.

CHAPTER SELECTION!!!!!

Finally. This is a great update. Thank god Apple is not neglecting the Apple TV>

Still no 1080p

Sigh. Still no 1080P support. It ain't gonna be big unless it fully uses the features of modern TVs. A lot of us waited until 1080p was released before getting a new TV and by Golly I am not going to get a TV device that will only show low resolution images on it. Once it goes 1080P for its movies then I would consider getting an Apple TV but not before that... (at it may not be powerful enough to do so)

All I want by Xmas is visualizations. Its just not that tough to add IMO. Boxee has that feature (just not ready to be an alpha tester for it). I'm fairly happy with the rest of the features. Could always use more drive space....

So you don't watch any TV? The only that comes in 1080p are Blu-ray media. Broadcast television is still 720p/1080i, by your logic your cable's DVR "device" only shows low resolution images.

Even if it could support 1080p, I'd rather take a cable 720p tv feed over what Apple if offering. The quality is just terrible.

Genuis?

Why does my TV say that all the songs in my library aren't accessible by the genius? My iMac doesn't have a problem, just this stupid thing. Any ideas?

Agh, this doesn't work the way I was hoping it would. If you listening to a song, you can add it to the "on the go play list", and continue to add songs to the list. But the stupid thing will only play up to the last song that was on the playlist when you started playing it.

This is only marginally better than before. You are no longer locked into a iTunes playlist but it isn't nearly as functional as it could be. Forget about even pondering whether to add the song you want to the end of the playlist to making the next to play...

I usually just pause the show as soon as it starts then i go grab a drink etc and by the time i come back it has streamed enough :)
Yeah, that is typically what I do as well, was just hoping it would do it automatically for me at the beginning.

This wouldn't be an issue if they would have just included gigabit ethernet when they introduced the hardware... I'll never figure that one out.

This version of the Apple TV is not going to get 1080P because it won't be able to play it back. Even synched HD TV Shows stutter at times at 720p. A new model is needed, and I want one, because the menu's, especially for Music Videos (this is still an issue) are pathetically slow.

Next week? There is talk that the new AppleTV will just be a new Mini with no optical drive and AppleTV ports out the back, and at least share the same insides.

on the go

just tried it - that is really really annoying! for me, one of the main uses of the apple tv is to stream music to my living room ... two features i really wanted was a 'juke box facility' which i thought this was and the other missing one is the search function to search MY MUSIC collection direct from the apple TV .

With version 2.0, the AppleTV also used to list TV episodes and tell you which season they were from. Very convenient if you have something like The Simpsons with a ton of seasons. Wish this feature would return also.
Not sure why version 2.1 took away so many great organizational features that had only been added with version 2.0.
Anyone know where these features went?

Not sure why this doesn twork for you as mine does. Go to iTunes and right click on get info. Under video make sure all season and episode boxes are filled (I think there are 4). As example Dexter shows season 1 and episode ID next to episode name. Between each episode is has a break point that says season 1, 2 etc.

Since 2.2 can play back HD TV shows, does that mean the playback specs have been increased? Previously the max was 1280x720 @ 24fps. Has that been increased to 30fps? That would be great for those of us that encode their own content!

obvious, but...

you have the ability to create genius playlists with Remote on :apple:TV.

Also noticed you can turn on/off and add a password to AirTunes, don't remember that in 2.1

Glad Apple is keeping their products (iTunes, iPhone/Touch, :apple:TV) in line. They alone are a lot of the reason I enjoy apple products.

genius improvement...

I wish under settings you could configure genius to generate playlists longer than 25 songs. I can see that limit on an ipod, but on :apple:TV i'd like to see more. Actually I'd like to see playlists over 100 songs.

People keep complaining about not being able to search their music, which I couldn't imagine doing with the standard remove, which is why it great to use an iPhone/Touch for a remote since you do have the ability to search.

So I don't think it's a missing feature in :apple:TV, just a missing feature with the regular remote.

This has bugged me since the whole HD announcement. I could only see HD shows in iTunes but my Apple TV seemed blind to them.

***Anyone else have the issue I'm having that SLEEP mode does not work anymore when holding the menu button???? I've not been able to SLEEP my APPLE TV for months now.***
Please forget I said this..... I just searched on Apple's website to see if anyone else had this problem and I've been holding the WRONG DAMN BUTTON THIS WHOLE TIME!!!!!!!!!

To answer those of you who are asking if you should buy an ATV.....

If you are looking for a slick way to wirelessly stream audio and video content from your desktop to your widescreen LCD then yeah, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're looking for something above-and-beyond this then you will probably be disappointed.

***Anyone else have the issue I'm having that SLEEP mode does not work anymore when holding the menu button???? I've not been able to SLEEP my APPLE TV for months now.***
Interestingly enough, I can't seem to wake mine up sometimes! I end up having to unplug it and reboot it up

...Sorry, but it seems like AppleTV will only ever be useful as a tv front-end to buying more 'stuff' from Apple. It's kind of obvious considering "Search" under MUSIC doesn't mean "Search my library" but rather "Search the iTunes Store" so hopefully you'll buy some more stuff that we make it hard to find". In other words, NO you CANNOT search your own music library from AppleTV. You'd think that'd be a feature by 2.2, but like I said, they don't seem to want to add any useful functionality what-so-ever...
I too have been very upset at the lack of a library search feature. I was thrilled to find out that the missing search feature in :apple:TV is available in the iPhone Remote app. The search is so fast that I can't believe it is downloading everything to the iPhone and doing the search locally, so the search must be in the :apple:TV itself, but there is just no GUI access to it. If you have an iPhone and have not tried Remote, give it a try and see what you think. It uses your wifi network and allows you to do searches, browse, play, skip, etc., all from anywhere in the house. And it is a free app!

Just got the security update for it:

Apple TV 2.2 is now available and addresses the following issues:

Installation note:

The Apple TV device will automatically check Apple's update server on
its weekly schedule. When an update is detected, it will download
it, verify its signature, and install it.

This process may take up to a week depending on the day that the
Apple TV device checks for updates. Alternatively, you may manually
update your Apple TV using the TV interface by selecting
Settings > Update Software.

This update is only available directly to the Apple TV, and will not
appear in your computer's Software Update application, or in the
Apple Downloads site.

To check that the Apple TV has been updated, use the TV interface:

* Navigate to Settings
* Select About
* The Software Version after applying this update will be "2.2"
* To exit the About screen to the main menu, press Menu

Information will also be posted to the Apple Security Updates
web site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

my apple tv cant find the update.

I've been loving the ATV since I got it, but it's been a bit unstable with iTunes 8, at least (not the ATV, really, just iTunes crashing). Hopefully with the 8.0.1 and ATV 2.2 updates I'll see 100% uptime and feel comfortable using it as my primary TV source (with EyeTV feeding it OTA recordings).

One step closer to saying so-long to Comcast!
