um... This update broke my Apple tv. Judging by all the threads popping up at Apple's support form, I'm not the only one.

This doesn't look good. I'm currently restored to 1.1.

Updated doesn't work on my AppleTV

I downloaded and installed the update (updated from 2.1 to 2.2), and now my AppleTV doesn't work anymore. It boots all the way to the opening movie, and then it just shows the Apple Logo. It doesn't show up in iTunes anymore. It seems to be responding to the remote as it is possible to reboot it by pressing and holding the menu and the - keys. I did a factory restore back to 1.0. It has no problem running that. But as soon as I upgrade the software again, it won't work. Has anyone else had the same problem? Any ideas?
Of course there is no way for me now to go back to 2.1, which worked just fine.

see the Apple support forums. Problems everywhere with anyone who updated later today.

I updated at about 7 pm and am stuck in the same loop.

Wtf

I updated to 2.2 and, once the start-up movie plays, I get a flashing Apple logo, and nothing else. Way to go, Apple! Did I mention I'm out of warranty and don't have a backup of my ATV's hard drive?

Edit: I mean, what is it with Apple's "updates" turning their products into bricks? First the iPhone, now the Apple TV. So much for "it just works!"

Try it again, everyone's unit seems to be back up now. It seems to me that Apple must have had some sort of a server issue tonight. When the unit wasn't able to "phone home" it just constantly rebooted. Now that it's making the connection, all is working fine again. It's obviously something that Apple needs to address though for a future update if a server outage is going to kill everyone's unit like that.

Ummm, what? Since when does the Apple TV need to "phone home" to be functional? Did no one learn anything from Sony's rootkit fiasco? Steve needs to fire the entire Apple TV QA team come Monday morning.

I updated mine about an hour ago and it became a brick. I restored to Apple TV 1.0, and will stay there until I get confirmation that Steve has had the dev team beaten.

I'm just speculating, but why else would everyone's unit all of a sudden start working again at the same time if that wasn't the case? Apple has some explaining to do on this for sure.

As well, are they now suggesting that without an active internet connection the atv is a brick ? Seems hard to believe, the atv should be able to work just fine without being connected to the internet (obviously minus rentals and updates, etc.) .

The AppleTV communicates with the iTunes store. There was an issue in that communication that has been resolved on the server side.

I understand that, but why did it make everyone's Apple TV totally inoperable until it was resolved? That is something that needs to definitely be addressed in my opinion.

Kevin, thanks for the info. But can you clarify this possibly, are you saying that unless the AppleTV can communicate with the iTunes store, it will not work ? Or was there some issue with *how* it communicates with the iTunes store ? I mean, I spose by unplugging the network connection I can find out. But it appears you already know and would be nice to have some confirmation.

Thanks for the insight.

If you unplug the network, you'll notice that the store related items in the main menu don't appear... These are generated after talking with the store.

It was this communication that had the issue.

Which implies that it would still boot up without a network connection. Something else is going on here, which leaves the implication of spyware and/or a rootkit up in the air.

Steve is gonna fire the dev team, and behead their cats (like the horse in The Godfather)....

And of the HD movies I've rented from my ATV, they are never ready for a few hours at least. We usually buy early in the morning, or late and night to allow the download to complete before starting. Bandwidth is already an issue for us, even at 720p.

I'm averaging 1 minute or less at all times. I've ordered all day long one Saturday (like 5 movies straight) and they all came up quickly. There's only been one time where there seemed to be a delay from the Apple Server and it took 15 minutes instead of 1 minute. I only have a 5Mbit connection to the Internet and I only watch HD movies on it.

FWIW, here's Apple's official statement on the incident. Still no indication though on exactly why a server issue would totally brick so many units until it was resolved. Hopefully that is something that can and will be resolved with a future software update.

Apple briefly experienced server difficulties resulting in some Apple TV units rebooting continuously. This issue has been resolved and is unrelated to the Apple TV 2.2 software release.

I had my ATV 2.1 set up just sweet. ssh activated. USB Drive connected and Samba mounts. nitoTV. All working perfectly.

Then I wake up Sunday morning and Apple have downloaded and installed an update onto my ATV without my consent, just 'automatically'.

So now ATV is borked, all added functionality gone. Great, a giant iPod for my TV again.

What right do Apple have to run these auto-updates? I don't consent for them to just upgrade the software on my machine at their times of choosing. I'm not renting this thing from Apple.

Anyone able to turn this auto-update feature OFF? Anyone ever complained to Apple about this?

I don't know of any other product where you have no 'choice' but to allow the manufacturer's updates, don't remember seeing this on the box 'WARNING: This machine will change at Apple's discretion, any ole time'?

Sure it'll be in the small print legalese somewhere but this MASSIVELY SUCKS to me, Apple just ruined my much improved ATV set-up in seconds. It's like they do it on purpose, heaven forbid a community of ATV users should improve their products secretly.:mad::mad:

this has never happened to me. every time there is an appletv update, i have had to update it myself. are you sure no one else could have seen that there was an update available and hit update on your appletv?

Yeah, but the difference is that they actually did change those. ATV hasn't seen a hardware upgrade since it was released, with the exception of a drive swap. It's not so much that what it can do isn't useful, it's that the platform can clearly do about 1000 more things, and we're not being given them.

Want an example? Here's a feature that would instantly catapult the ATV from "meh" to "get one right now". AirDisk support. That's right, the same software that lets you use your DVD on the MacBook Air could be used to allow the ATV to become a DVD player. And just for fun, allow it to support the external DVD through the USB.

I think one of the reasons that the ATV doesn't sell as well as it should is because it becomes "one more limited source" in the AV stack. But if the ATV was the center of that stack instead, then it seems more interesting. One of those inputs is going to be DVD, and it seems like AirDisk is a great way to eliminate that.

Maury

Cool idea, but Apple would never support it. The future for Apple is in digital downloads, not DVD's. Granted, they may support Blu-Ray at some point due to customer demand, but that's about it. Think back to when Steve Jobs intro'ed iLife '08; the updates to iDVD were tiny, and he admitted that he doesn't see why people still wanted DVD's, but that Apple would still support it anyways.

The Apple tv's long-term success is predicated on the idea that digital downloads, especially movies and tv shows, are a raging success.

Just my 2 cents.

Me, too. My HD downloads are ready within 30 seconds. Must be due to my internet connection, I get 12mb/sec. with my provider.

1) How the HELL do we put this thing to sleep now????? :( I hold down the play button like usual but it won't go to sleep anymore. Do I have to change an option with the new sleep mode thing now or is there a new way to put it to sleep??? Am I missing something? Help!

I went to the standby option in the menu and I guess it is sleeping, but do we have to go to the menu and select that every time to put it to sleep now??? Kind of dumb.

2) LITERALLY EVERY SONG I try to do Genius with, it says that song is not available. WTF???

3) I have also noticed that lots of rental options have been disappearing. What the hell is going on Apple??? I never wanted to go to Hollywood video again when I got my Apple TV, and I have found myself going 3 times in the last month because nothing is for rent anymore until after like 2 freakin months. WTF???

You're not missing anything — holding down the play/pause button now activates the sub-menu that's used to add songs to playlists, activate Genius, change sound options, etc. A welcome change in my opinion.

You have to first activate Genius within iTunes, and then sync your Apple TV.

Apple's at the mercy of the movie industry. What do you want them to do? From the studio's standpoint, this is likely do to decreases in DVD sales. That and they don't want Apple to control the entire rental market—like they do with Music purchases—therefore they've limited the rental availability window.

Are these rentals your missing out on available at competing providers like Amazon?

Does Apple want to kill the ATV?

this has never happened to me. every time there is an appletv update, i have had to update it myself. are you sure no one else could have seen that there was an update available and hit update on your appletv?

So I come home Friday night to find the "update" done without my knowledge or consent. Then I go to the local Apple Store at 11am and they know nothing about the problem. After time-consuming attempts at resetting, I finally get it back to version 1, then upgraded to version 2.2. Except 2.2 deleted everything I had paid to download to the Apple TV. Now, I have to spend my time trying to hound Apple on how to get the content back?!

Apple - listen very closely: IF YOU EXPECT TO SELL YOUR PRODUCTS AT THE EXCESSIVE PREMIUM THAT YOU DO, THEN THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THEM ARE PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO WORK LONG HOURS ON STRESSFUL JOBS. WE ONLY GET A FEW HOURS A WEEK OFF TO RELAX ON THE WEEKEND. IF WE HAVE TO SPEND THEM FIXING YOUR MISTAKES WE WILL STOP BUYING YOUR PRODUCTS.
