this has never happened to me. every time there is an appletv update, i have had to update it myself. are you sure no one else could have seen that there was an update available and hit update on your appletv?

And just to confirm the update had installed itself overnight, without my input. Apple decided my Hardware needed an upgrade and went ahead and installed it for me. Worse than Microsoft.

You're not missing anything — holding down the play/pause button now activates the sub-menu that's used to add songs to playlists, activate Genius, change sound options, etc. A welcome change in my opinion.

You have to first activate Genius within iTunes, and then sync your Apple TV.

Apple's at the mercy of the movie industry. What do you want them to do? From the studio's standpoint, this is likely do to decreases in DVD sales. That and they don't want Apple to control the entire rental market—like they do with Music purchases—therefore they've limited the rental availability window.

Are these rentals your missing out on available at competing providers like Amazon?

Got things working now. Thanks for the help! :)

I know Apple is at the mercy of Hollywood, it just pisses me off because Hollywood is a bunch of Nazy morons that can't embrace technology and new business models, they only try to control, control, control!!!

P.S. Why does the Apple TV have such a hard time restarting when installing updates???

3) I have also noticed that lots of rental options have been disappearing. What the hell is going on Apple??? I never wanted to go to Hollywood video again when I got my Apple TV, and I have found myself going 3 times in the last month because nothing is for rent anymore until after like 2 freakin months. WTF???

I believe this is a glitch or screwup by someone at iTunes. I do not believe it's because Hollywood is suddenly pulling rental titles. I mean come on, they just added the two Matrix sequels in HD and after a year, suddenly the first Matrix movie is NO LONGER available to rent? Almost half the "Must See HD" rentals are NOT AVAILABLE TO RENT! That's ABSURD. I want to rent Superbad and it's no longer available to rent even though it's the #1 HD Rental listed under Must See HD rentals.... That HAS to be a glitch/bug/screwup.

So, I've attempted THREE TIMES now to try and contact Apple about this problem and at least get a response one way or another about whether they were purposely removed from rentals or not. The first feedback reply told me to send my report to a provided iTunes feedback link instead (because Apple support apparently cannot forward it themselves?). Um, OK. So I did that and I got no reply.... To add insult to injury, Apple sent me a "how did it go with our feedback survey" and so I filled that out (with failing grades and yet another report about the problem in the 'comments' field) and STILL no reply. Yet movies like Superbad CONTINUE to sit in the "Must See HD Rentals" field (they could AT LEAST fix that part and remove them from that field if they are no longer available to rent) and nothing has changed.

I can only conclude that the people at Apple are INCOMPETENT at best and idiots at worst. If this IS a glitch/screwup like I suspect, it's costing them money. If it's a loss of rentals, then they should remove them from the Must See rental lists. And regardless, they should darn well reply to their feedback forms instead of acting like we don't exist and the problem doesn't exist.

1) How the HELL do we put this thing to sleep now????? :( I hold down the play button like usual but it won't go to sleep anymore. Do I have to change an option with the new sleep mode thing now or is there a new way to put it to sleep??? Am I missing something? Help!

I went to the standby option in the menu and I guess it is sleeping, but do we have to go to the menu and select that every time to put it to sleep now??? Kind of dumb.

No, it still works - now you have to hit "Menu" first, then you can hold down play and it will go into standby...

Does anybody have a problem with the "Resume Movie" / "Start from the Beginning" option. Every time I select start from the beginning it resumes the movie. I have to then exit out of the movie and do the same thing all over again. Only then will it actually start the movie from the beginning. It's been happening ever since the update. Weird!!

While some of the new features are nice, like the chapters, there are major glitches with music playback in the menus when trying to exit a music video.

This is also the most laggy menus system to date for the Apple TV, and it is starting to get very annoying, as each update brings worse menu lag.

The Music Videos on all of Apple's devices, including iTunes, do not remember the last spot played, and always restart from the beginning. This is not a glitch, and has become a major hassle for me since I have scores of Music DVD's that never remember the spot last saved. I may have to put them all under TV Shows or something which is ridiculous. This was a feature up until around the time 2.0 came out for both the iPhone and the Apple TV.

As far as the rental thing goes, I too have been disappointed. Apple needs to get a hold on it, and they NEED a subscription model.

AppleTV Wants - My 2-Cents

Well, while we're on the subject I thought I would toss my two cents worth in on AppleTV. I agree, there is a lot more it could do, and it has had it's quirks. I think Apple has been putting most of its resources on the iPhone/Touch, then Mac, and finally products like ATV.

Here is my want list:

Allow ATV to sync with iCal. I would love to see my calendar for the day much like a hotel TV calendar of events channel.

Rent a TV program as mentioned previously. I really don't need to own a lot of the TV programs I am interested in. Just catch that one or two I miss or don't see because of work. Yes I know I can by a DVR, but I don't watch that much broadcast/cable TV.

Sports scores. Ok not a big deal, but I have a widget on my Mac that does this, why not ATV?

And as I mentioned in a previous post - a DVD player which plugs into the back of it, and sits under it – maybe with a extra fan for all that heat ;) It would be a nice convenience add on.

And I do like some of the other suggestions listed in this thread as well.

Progress

So I come home Friday night to find the "update" done without my knowledge or consent. Then I go to the local Apple Store at 11am and they know nothing about the problem. After time-consuming attempts at resetting, I finally get it back to version 1, then upgraded to version 2.2. Except 2.2 deleted everything I had paid to download to the Apple TV. Now, I have to spend my time trying to hound Apple on how to get the content back?!

Apple - listen very closely: IF YOU EXPECT TO SELL YOUR PRODUCTS AT THE EXCESSIVE PREMIUM THAT YOU DO, THEN THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD THEM ARE PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO WORK LONG HOURS ON STRESSFUL JOBS. WE ONLY GET A FEW HOURS A WEEK OFF TO RELAX ON THE WEEKEND. IF WE HAVE TO SPEND THEM FIXING YOUR MISTAKES WE WILL STOP BUYING YOUR PRODUCTS.

UPDATE: I am happy to report that Apple has started to fix my problem, unfortunately each lost tv episode is its own help desk ticket so this may take a while. But at least I got four BSG episodes back today which is a good start for a Sunday...

While some of the new features are nice, like the chapters, there are major glitches with music playback in the menus when trying to exit a music video.

Um, I think that's supposed to be a new 'feature'. In other words, music videos are more or less treated like any other music file in ATV now, which means they keep on playing when you exit back to the menu system unless you tell them to stop FIRST with the play/pause button. You might have noticed that ATV shows the mini-video thingy in the corner for them now like a music track does when the screen saver kicks in. I might be OK with these changes except for a couple of irritating behaviors/bugs.

One is that instead of just showing that little corner song name thing, it ALSO shows that time/track bar graph thing filling up as it loads, thus disrupting the whole song-to-song continuous feel of it all and making you remember you're watching ATV, not the music video channel.

The other thing is that when I select Shuffle for music videos, it only seems to work with store-bought videos. Ones I've made myself can only randomly be selected for the very first track. After that, it only shuffles through the ones I bought from the iTunes store and then stops. My other 100+ videos I made with Handbrake from my music DVD collection won't play unless I select them directly, thus defeating the whole point of shuffle play. I have no idea what the issue is, but it seems like Apple doesn't want you making your own content for ATV and iTunes from store-bought products.

It might seem like they want you to buy from the iTunes store, even though it's missing most of the classic music videos out there. I want Venus by Bananarama. It's not available. I can buy Simply Irresistible by Robert Palmer, but Addicted To Love is nowhere to be found. There isn't one single Aerosmith video on iTunes. Paula Abdul only has 3 music videos, apparently. There's a slew of Sheryl Crow videos, but no sign of her first video "All I Wanna Do". Don't even ask for something like the haunted room video for "Got My Mind Set On You" let alone the alternate video for it (penny arcade setting) because they don't have either one. I could go on, but suffice to say 3/4 the videos I looked for are nowhere to be found.

This is also the most laggy menus system to date for the Apple TV, and it is starting to get very annoying, as each update brings worse menu lag.

Lag...heck, just give me a front panel reset button (let alone an off switch) for when it inevitably freezes/crashes sooner or later. I guess that's not supposed to ever happen. LOL.

The odd thing there is I started watching Tori Amos' Caught A Lite Sneeze video in iTunes 8.0.1 in Leopard and then moved on to another song while testing CPU usage and when I started the same track in Tiger, it actually resumed where it left off in Leopard (i.e. I do have it share the same library between operating system versions, but I didn't expect that to happen). It must have been a glitch, though since it didn't resume where I left off any other videos I tested. It kind of reminds me of the JVC car stereo I just bought. It'll sometimes remember where it left off playing on my USB stick even if I remove the stick and put it back in a day or two later. Other times, it completely loses its spot if I just turn the car off for 5 minutes and there's not rhyme or reason to its behavior (believe me I've tried to find it).

The Music Videos used to remember the spot , like they do for TV Shows and Movies.

What you said about the Shuffle is interesting. Not sure how that is going to get resolved.

I have no problem with the Music Video's music playing the in background, but not at the expense of menu lag and stuttering playback.

If you can here the AppleTV from another room, something is probably wrong. The hard drive is the only thing that should make noise, and it should spin down when it isn't syncing in standby mode.

It doesn't, and it never has. Does yours? Are you SURE?

Cool idea, but Apple would never support it.

Why not? It only costs them some development time, nothing else. It also means that a consumer can get an Apple TV and a DVD for the same price as an Apple TV.

Apple is very much aware of the problems of backward compatibility (cf Classic, Carbon, etc.). One of the reasons you can't JUST buy an Apple TV is that you already own DVDs. It is illegal to burn them, unlike CD's, so Apple can't offer that as a solution.

AirDisk, on the other hand, would work fine.

My additions:

Weather, just like the dashboard one. I hate having to flip around for the weather channel and then wait.

Real visualizers, as opposed to just the pictures. Everyone wants this, it seems.

Better power/output control. I should be able to turn off all screen output when playing an audio-only stream. My TV will go to sleep in these situations, which is good.

Internet radio support. You can actually fake this to get it to work, so why not just make it work?

AirDisk support. Then I could chuck both my DVD player AND the one remote.

Accept CEC power-down messages. So when I put my TV to sleep it will tell the ATV to go to sleep too.

Who doesn't already have a regular DVD player?

All of these additions are great... but I just want it to work properly with iLife FIRST!!! Can someone please tell me why the AppleTV doesn't work with iMovie or at least have the capability to see other movie files on my computer? It is SO FRUSTRATING to have to copy all of my home movie files, import them into iTunes, name them with something consistent at the front so they are all put into the same spot, and integrate them into all of my hollywood movies.... just so I can see them on the big screen. How annoying!

AppleTV should be able to see my movies folder, just like frontrow!
This really shouldn't be so hard, and you wouldn't think this would be such a strange request. I'm really surprised this hasn't happened yet.

The Pricing Structure of Apple needs a Big Rethink $1.99 is too much for a 3 min Music video, maybe .99 but no more. TV Shows are 1.99 whether they are 19 min or an Hour, and SD is $2.99. I think SD should drop to .99 and HD $1.99

AirDisk, on the other hand, would work fine.
I believe the feature you are thinking of is "Remote Disc" in the MacBook Air. It allows you to read a DVD that is inserted into another computer. Unfortunately, Remote Disc doesn't support DVD movies so this wouldn't work.

AirDisk allows you to share a USB hard drive connected to an Airport Extreme.
