I use a macbook, where my itunes is stored but have purchased apple tv 2.

I was wondering if the buffalo linkstation i have can be used for my libary with apple tv so i dont have to have my macbook on 24-7.

I don't understand airplay and I am not sure how to go about doing the above.

Ideally I want to store my movies on my network hard drive to stream to my tv for watching when I am not on my computer etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You certainly can use the external HD, however ATV2 requires iTunes to be running to function for Movies that you have. All other functionality of ATV2 like Netflix, etc runs without iTunes runing. Like I siad if you want access to your movies iTunes must be running.

I'm just starting to look into this also.

Can you use airplay to play videos from your ipad on your tv through your apple tv without a computer running iTunes? Or does it go through iTunes on the computer? I'm thinking of getting an apple tv if I can play movies direct from my ipad.

Airplay will play SOME movies on your ATV2. It depends on the source of your media. I have found that locally stored movies work OK if you sync them through your itunes connection. Some other methods don't work so well, for example, if you are using CatchupTV (Which streams TV from the internet to your ipad) then you can only Airplay the Audio to your ATV and the lag is awful so unusable.

If you have a jalibroken ipad there is an app from Cydia that apparently enables airplay on more media sources, but I have not tried this myself.
