Apple TV 2 + originally shipped firmware

I'm hoping someone will have some quick info on the Apple TV 2. Basically, I'm trawling through eBay for one as I'm looking to jailbreak it and install XBMC because it's not quite ready for iOS5 and the jailbreak is only tethered currently.

I've spotted an unopened Apple TV 2 on eBay. Did any come shipped with iOS5? This device was bought around January of this year.

It's ridiculous the jailbraked devices on eBay are at an extortionate price.

If its unopened then it should have stock firmware for the Apple TV 2, which starts at 4.1 (according to Wikipedia), how ever because it was brought earlier this year it wont have iOS 5 because it was released with the 3rd Generation of Apple TV, in March 2012.

So in my opinion i think you should be OK with it, however don't just take my word for it, ask other people and contact the seller?

The problem is even if you find one with older firmware you will not have a backup of the files needed to jailbreak it. Apple is no longer signing the previous firmwares so you won't be able to jailbreak it until an untethered solution comes out for the current iOS.

Just install the latest firmware and tether jailbreak it. I'm running XBMC Eden and works good .

Same here, I have one with 4.4.4. and one with 5. Both work great jailbroken.

my ATV 2 was running 4.4.3. I tried JB using Seas0npass a couple weeks ago, but wasnt able to because I was getting an error about Apple not signing the older version anymore.

Im not sure if an untethered ATV2 iOS 5 JB is out yet. Which tethered method did you use? My goal is to run the latest version version of XBMC with ios 5+ on my ATV2. All suggestions are welcome...

Even if that unopened device had older version of the firmware, you won't be able to jailbreak it, since Apple is NOT signing that firmware anymore.

You only options are buying an already jailbroken device (pay the premium) or use the tethered jailbreak on the most current version of the firmware.

Same thing here. I had two jailbroken ones running 4.4.4, my fathers was on 4.4.1 and I tried to jailbreak his. Apple wasn't signing off so I took his and gave him mine. Then I tether jailbroke his on iOS 5.

I think that is going to be the only way for now.

Oh I used seasonpass. When you boot up the Apple TV you have to have it plugged into the computer and use their software. Works great, but it's annoying if you lose power or "shut down" your ATV. In reality, you'll probably only have to tether boot it the first time only. XBMC works great on it too.
