Hi,

Thinking of getting a new ATV to replace a 40gb version - can the new stream existing content from a Time Capsule or does it actually need a computer switched on.

I have no desire to keep an iMac on, but the capsule is on 24/7.

Grateful for advice.

Thanks for your reply - that seemed to be the case but I decided I was reading it wrong. Why would you not build in that sort of functionality?

Because ATV is merely an extension device with no media management capabilities.

And therefore in my eyes, pretty pointless. Whilst I understand the sentiment of the device, the need to have a computer on makes it less flexible. I think people want flexibility - I'll still with the original.

I don't disagree with you but to tell you the truth I did not buy it for the ability to stream my iTunes media, but mostly as a Netflix player and a video rental device, at which ATV excels IMO. As soon as I'll have enough time to move my movies from MB to Time Capsule I'll stream those too. I hope that Apple will add Hulu Plus to ATV, then I will seriously consider ditching my satellite TV service.

In the UK Netflix is not an option - and the original sells movies and shows through iTunes.

I thought that you could not stream from Time Capsule?

You can stream from a Time Capsule or many other storage devices (such as external hard drives)...but you need to go through iTunes.

It is not that big of a deal, your computer advertises its iTunes content even when it is asleep. When I access some content on AppleTV when the iMac is asleep, it takes a few moments while the hard drive spins up, then works fine. The iMac's screen does not even wake from sleep. It works just as you think it should, you just have to make sure the computer is turned on and iTunes is open. Make it a start up item...

I'm not sure this is the case. My iTunes library doesn't show up on ATV until my laptop is fully awake.

Streaming direct from my NAS would be sweet but this would be the next best thing if it worked.

I never leave my iMac on, that is what the iPad is for. If it doesn't stream from my time capsule I will stay with the old one.

It will not stream from your time capsule without your computer and iTunes being ON.

I'm looking forward to AirPlay being released for the Apple TV and iDevices because essentially you could load your iPad/iPhone with movies/tv shows/music/video podcast and then stream that content directly to the ATV wile being able to keep your computer off. You will be limited by the storage capacity of your iDevice, but if you plan ahead and load specific content that you plan on viewing, you could make it work.

will streaming from the TC to ATV2 speed be the same if you stream directly from your mac or way slower?
