I wouldn't be surprised if the retailer margin on these things is close to 30%. Retailers generally get large margins to cover the cost of sales personnel and stores.
 
Possibly because some CompUSAs are closing? I don't know why they would do this for the online store, though.

This is true for most manufacturers, but not Apple- they traditionally distribute products for almost full retail price.

Traditionally, that is true... and is also why you don't see large sales on Apple products. So either this is CompUSA /trying/ to burn their business to the ground, or Apple providing retailers with larger than usual margins.

Or the $50 they'd be "losing" still isn't as bad as not selling a unit. :rolleyes: They could also be counting on the fact that at least in B&M stores, maybe it'd get customers to buy other things.
 
BTW... I also saw this advertised price in today's paper (compusa advertisement), which is what prompted me to check their website. So it's not an online only price. Although, I don't know how B&M preorders work. They didn't mention "preorder" in the circular. It's possible that they jumped the gun, and forgot to take Apple's shipping delay under account with their planned advertising.
 
The compusa tech specs also list 1080i output is available. I thought 720p was the limit with apple tv? Perhaps compusa just got it wrong?

Output Resolution / Refresh Rates:

* 1080i
* 720p
* 576p (PAL format)
* 480p

Good point- I could certainly see that happening. Unless they add something else (PVR, larger HDD, gaming, etc.) i think most people agree $300 is way steep.
 
Personally, I think the $250 price point is very attractive for this device.

I still don't know if I'll buy one, but it has me curious about what features will be available upon the official release. If I can rent movies for under $4, stream an archived DVD collection (even via handbrake hackery, or some other technique), and get 5.1 audio, I'll buy one (maybe two).
 
This was also advertised in their Sunday print ad. But it didn't even say that it was a pre-order. Heres a photo from the print ad.

That $50 certainly makes the price look a whole lot cheaper. I hope this is the new price, not just CompUSA's.

Those exact same specs have been up on Apple's website now since January...
 
Apple emphasizes 720P because it's better than 1080i, even though there are those that will disagree with me.

Perhaps CompUsa knows something we don't know like better specs coming out on the one's directly from the Apple store ? :confused:
 
Maybe it isn't the 160GB. He He

Just checked, the number 711LL/A is the 40GB so its no big deal. You can get it for $230 from Apple.
