Im looking for a solution that fits my needs. I have a NAS that holds all my media,I then use my iMAC to transcode MKV files to a PS3. THe PS3 can only play MP4 and some AVI files.

My question is first can a Jailbroken ATV play MKV files and How does it access its files? IS it only thru itunes or can I tell it to path to my NAS? Again my question is for Jailbroken version.

I also am looking at the Roku which does play MKV out of the box. Im still in research phase at the moment. But if ATV can meet my needs I will go that route because all my gadgets are Apple. Phone,Ipad,Imac...Yes I am a fanboy:rolleyes:

the Answer to your first question is "Yes" .. but only the 2nd Gen. Take a look here : http://firecore.com/atvflash-black. You could even try Plex - I believe you just point it at your NAS and no need for iTunes.

I looked at the Roku a few years back too, but I decided the ATV fitted my needs more. Shame Apple have locked it down to the extent that it can't (as of this point in time) be jailbroken :(

I will research Flash-Black..

No.. I'm referring to the ATV2, which is no longer available from Apple - you'll have to search on eBay etc to find one and their high price reflects the fact that it's capable of being Jailbroken.

You can do more with a jailbroken ATV2 than you can with a Roku, including pointing it at your own NAS which holds your media (AFAIK.. not 100% sure, but I believe Roku just streams from internet and not from a network share.. unless there's some way around this). Quite important if you don't have unlimited Data on your broadband.

// edit

nearly forgot.. Roku won't handle "Airplay", which is just awesome :)

It costs like 250$ now for version 2.

For the record, Roku have channels that allow you to stream locally and directly from NAS.

Plex allow you to stream from a local machine running plex server and there are a couple of channel to point to a NAS.

also for the record, I like the ATV jailbroken UI better however it doesn't support 1080p. (i got ATV2 on my 32'' in the bedroom, and the Roku on my 60'' in the living room)
