I've been using a setup with the Apple TV streaming from iTunes on an HP MediaSmart Server, to my main HT system and controlled by an iPod Touch so I don't need my TV turned on. It worked great... until the recent 3.0 update. Now I can't find any streaming content using the Touch. I've done some searching here but haven't found anything that's worked so far.

One thing to note is that the iTunes on the HP is 8.2, as iTunes 9 and up seem to require OS features that WHS 2003 doesn't have. I don't know if this is an issue but figured I'd mention and ask.

Anyway, what I have tried is making sure that:

  • Apple TV can stream from the HP via Shared Music
  • iTunes on the HP sees the Apple TV
  • iTunes settings for AirTunes speakers and iPod Touch Remotes are checked in Preferences

But I still can't find anything in Remote that shows the Shared Music from the streaming. I also tried going into the settings in Remote on the Touch and adding iTunes itself from the HP. It shows up, but never plays anything. (Either just doesn't play or sometimes I get "an unknown error occurred".)

I appreciate any suggestions!

*bump*

Is anybody out there doing this successfully? Using Remote to control Apple TV 3.0 streaming from iTunes on a server?

FWIW - I just opened up the app store and the remote app has an update for it. Maybe this will help?

FYI, 3.1 came out for Apple TV a couple days after 3.0; might want to try that as well

My Apple TV is running 3.01. (I don't think there's a 3.1 yet is there?) I did update the Remote app last night, and nothing changed. grozier may be right that iTunes 9.x is required, but Apple TV itself certainly doesn't require it, as everything is working fine between my Apple TV 3.01 and iTunes 8.2. It's just the Remote and Apple TV that aren't showing all options, and maybe that cares what version of iTunes is being streamed to the Apple TV but it's not obvious to me that it should.

I upgraded iTunes on the HP server to 9.0.2 this evening.

Still can't see any way to use Remote to control the Apple TV streaming content.

Really not happy with Apple right now, I spent a good bit of time researching this setup, good money and more time to implement it, and it worked fine for a few weeks. Now it's broken courtesy of Apple updates.
