was browsing through indiegogo site and run into this project:

http://www.indiegogo.com/appletv3

Looks like someone seriously has waited too long for the jb :p

no amount of money wont change the fact that the ATV3 has no holes in it to insert what the jailbreakers need. cut your losses...wait for the android port or pray that apple sees that EVERY SINGLE ATV2 has been sold but the atv3s remain on the shelf collecting dust until they "allow" a hole to be found.

Well I don't have any interest in Jailbreaking my ATV, and I just sold my 2 for a pretty good profit! Paid upgrade to an AT3! I like! :D

So for $25 you get the "software"

For $250 you get a $99 AppleTV, and $5 MicroUSB cable and the previously mentioned $25 software. Where's the other $120 going?

The other prices are too ridiculous to post.

and the guy wants $20,000 for the project..... no thank you sir.

The ATV3 is selling better than the AZtV2. Only a small minority want to jailbreak their AZtV's, usually to run XBMC ( not optimal) or Plex (not optimal).

If you want to run XBMC use Mountail Lion's AirPlay mirroring and Rowmote on an iPod Touch.

What's nice for the guys asking for money is that they're not required by indiegogo or kickstarter or any other crowdfunding site to actually deliver.

It's a kickstarter like project. They aren't really just selling you the aTV for $250. Contribute $250 and at the contribution level that's what you get. Higher levels get more goodies. I assuming that like kickstarter their are the downsides of it's a complete gamble. Needed cash no raised, your screwed. Cash raised but they still can bring the product to marker, your still screwed. You donate to things like this and kickstarter projects because for whatever reason you believe in the product and want to see it come to market. Think of it more as a donation with a potential return than buying something.

Reads like a scam...

Project owner has provided zero proof that he has done anything that may support his ability to jailbreak ATV3.

im not sure what you are classifying as "better." Maybe fiscally better...sure because they have made more of them and STOPPED producing the ATV2. i would like to see the numbers on the amount of people who purchased the ATV3 solely on relying on the JB to come out...im in that category. I feel that EVERY ATV2 made has been sold and since that is the case people are selling them for 3 times as much as MSRP due to this fact that they are in HIGHER demand because of this SMALL minority.

Im also confused on what you feel is optimal....having a native player(xbmc or plex) on the ATV3 that plays any format of video using the standard ATV3 remote sounds way more optimal to me. than 1)buying a NEWER mac to even run ML airplay...2)buying ML 3)buying an ipod touch to control airplay and 4)buying rowmote software to control it all.

im pretty sure your optimal and better definitions are incorrect.

Warning...I have no basis for these numbers...just trying to make a point...

I would estimate that for every 1 person that buys an ATV with the expectation of jail breaking that there are 50 buyers of ATV that have no idea what a jail break even means.

Yes, ATV2 models are selling at a premium right now, being purchased by a "relatively" select audience, not a large population that would move Apple's needle.

I am one that just sold my 2 ATV2s and replaced them with 3 ATV3s for no added cost. I'll use Plex and AirPlay until Plex is a supported app in the AppleTV app store (he says with hope!).

Until then, Plex and AirPlay do work well together.

Almost noone who bought the ATV2 jailbroke it. The ATV3 sold far better than the ATV2. The availability of a jailbreak on the ATV2 had a negligible effect on its sales. The majority of people wanting to jailbreak it and install XBMC wanted access to free grey area content, for example via Navi-X.

If you already own a newer Mac and if you have a fairly recent iDevice ML mirroring gives you a better Plex or XBMC experience than jail breaking. XBMC on the ATV2 was never very good. RowMote costs 99 cents.

If you don't own iDevices that can AirPlay to an ATV it made less sense to buy an ATV.

What I was saying is that ML mirroring to the ATV3 is a better experience, technically, than the whole jailbreak thing, which is a pain.

Finally, if you want to run XBMC or play mkv scene files there are far better options than an ATV.

agreed if you dont play your media through itunes there are better devices than the ATV

like what???

people keep saying that but the bottom line is there is nothing more cost effective and easier to setup that plays personal content better(prettier), netflix, hulu, and xbmc than an apple tv.

Examples:

* apple tv 1 - great device once broadcom card is added and crystalbuntu - NO NETFLIX,hulu
* any android settop box - crap software, no XBMC support yet - none are less than $100
* revo or any other HTPC - Cost cost cost
*PS3 or Xbox 360 - cost and not pretty.
*Rasp pi or any other SOC - not quite there yet

bottom line remains that for less than $100(when is was new) an atv2 is the BEST way to get all this content

People have to stop thinking Apple is the only game in town. My tv came with Netflix, Hulu, MLB, Amazon and Plex built in. It also has a version of some sort of AirPlay but work on Windows or Android and will play any media from a directly attached USB hard drive as well as at any media from a DLNA source. Non DRM of course....all over wifi and was part of the price of the tv which I was buying anyway. It was no harder to set up than the ATV. enter user name and passwords, plug in hdd and plex automatically found running servers.

I would say my TV does everything and more than the Apple TV. The main reason I have an ATV is for iTunes content and AirPlay.

Do not get me wrong i think the ATV is great and owned one before i purchased my Smart TV(in fact I own 3), but to say nothing does what the ATV does as well for the price is false once you remove iTunes drm content from the discussion.

i will still argue that your smart tv isnt as EASY(read WAF) to use as the ATV is....and clearly the cost is up there. But again even though you made the argument that yes other devices do similar things as an ATV...they dont do EVERYTHING. Name one other software program that organizes and plays mp3s/cds/music like itunes does...DRM or not. Name one other software program that organizes and syncs photos to itunes like iphone/aperture does. and then there is of course airplay....who doesnt have another IOS device lying around that they would love to show on the big screen. if you add in EVERYTHING and not just 90% as you have then yes the apple tv 2 IS the only game in town. The only MORE i can see your tv doing is that you can add a USB drive to it and it will read files and play them etc. However ill still make the argument that you have a computer somewhere in the house always on to keep putting media on that USB drive therefore negating the one issue with the ATV in that you kinda do need an always on computer to manage itunes.
