Apple TV 3 streaming slow from PB G4

Hello all,

I recently bought an Apple TV 3 and put it in this morning to try it out. For my Home Library I've set up an old PB G4 with a 1tb Lacie connected to it, with the itunes library on the hd. I run everything over the wifi.

Has anyone tried this setup, if so, did it work for you? Will it be quicker by using ethernet for both? Is it the fact that my PB is 6 years old? I've wiped it and it runs perfectly and I only run itunes and spotify on it.

I have a recently bought macbook pro as well so I tried to run the home sharing from this computer instead and it wasn't extremely much quicker. Movies still took a while to load.

I would really appreciate your help!

I think you need either ethernet or 802.11n to reliably stream HD. Audio from iTunes or Spotify should be no problem over 802.11g, which is probably what your G4 has, IIRC. Of course there are other factors; it depends also on distance, obstacles, and how crowded the spectrum is at your location. Since a 6-year-old computer likely doesn't have "n", I would recommend the Gig-E connection instead.

But I recommend that just on general principles.

Try wifi, and if things begin to rise above your tolerance level, go Gig-E.

Thank you so much for your reply! When you say Gig-E I guess you're referring to ethernet? Sorry, not familiar with the term.

So i'll try and hook up both the ATV and the PB G4 to a cable and see what happens. The PB is not receiving more than about 2-3 bars for the wireless so that might be the problem.

I don't know how much it matters, but the router I'm using is not an airport of any kind. It's a "Free Box", provided by the internet provider: http://www.free.fr/adsl/internet.html

Not sure if that matters though...

The Powerbook's wireless is the problem here. WiFi G can't push data fast enough to be able to stream HD content without lots of buffering. Try connecting the Powerbook to the network with an Ethernet cable. The Apple TV's N WiFi is fast enough to move data, pending tha it is on a N network. Also, if your Powerbook is one of the older ones with USB 1.1 ports, that could be slowing it down as well. USB 2 or FireWire is needed.

I'm using USB 2 for the HD so that should be fine. I'll try to hook the PB with a cable when I get home and see what happens.

Update: So I got myself a cable, hooked it up, and voila. Works perfectly. Smooth and no problems whatsoever. Thanks awesome MacRumors forum for your quick replies!
