Apple TV 5.1 and Stereo, is this possible please ?

Just a quick question from a newb please if I may?

I am in the process of converting all of my Movies (800 odd) into iTunes to play through my Apple TV. This is connected to an Onkyo AV receiver so 5.1 is the preffered format. This is situated in my living room.

I also intend to add a second Apple TV later in the year and place this in my Bedroom. This will be plain old Stereo (or even mono..) sound through an LCD TV Set.

Will all my stuff already ripped by then play fine through the TV (downmixed) or is there something I need to do know to ensure future compatibility.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

BTW, I am using and vaguley familiar with Handbrake, Mac The Ripper, Lostify and MetaX

Handbrake 0.9.2 with the ATV preset will give you both AC3 (5.1) and AAC (2-channel DPLII). The ATV2 software autodetects your TV or Onkyo and uses the appropriate audio track for playback.

Just make sure you include both an AAC track as well as an AC3 DD track. HandBrake 0.9.2's AppleTV preset does this. The AppleTV hooked up to a 5.1 capable receiver will automatically use the AC3 5.1 track, and the AppleTV not hooked up to a 5.1 capable receiver will just use the aac dpl2 track. Best of both worlds.

You need to make sure your doing this...

In handbrake, make sure you select AC3+AAC under the Audio setting. This will increase the file size a bit but if you don't, the only thing that will be able to play back your audio will be another TV. No other computer with iTunes in the house will have any audio unless you have both.

If you plan on only playing back with TV's (forever and ever) then your probably OK with just the AC3. You would have to have an Optical input on the TV to get the 5.1 audio from the TV out and into the LCD which would then convert it to Stereo for its own speakers.

I would be safe and use both. Its only approx 100-150MB more for each Movie on average for the AAC track.
