I might grab an Apple TV along with my new macpro, but only have a "B" wireless router...all my office pc's are close enough to wire together. I see I can get a nice Linksys "G"/"N" for around a $100, but do I really need it?

Will I be able to stream converted xvid and divx tv shows and music with a "B"?

What about these Gigabit routers I see, any advantage there, or would an "N" be good enough? Thanks guys!

Thats what I was afraid of. N/G is OK?

The problem is the bitrate and video size/complexity. While 802.11g will transmit a DVD-sized 1500 bit rate movie just fine (so long as there's not too much other traffic), when you get to HD-quality (e.g., 1080i, 2500 bit rate, Dolby Pro Logic II or 5.1) you'll likely have real issues with transmission. If you can go 802.11n, then I'd recommend it.

If you're going to be upgrading from b, go all the way up to n. It'll cost you a few bucks more and you won't have to upgrade again for.. well, a year at least :)

If you are gonna spend money on the problem then I would stop and think how much effort and/or expense will be required to lay a cable to your T.V. In my experience the bandwidth provided by ethernet is always *much* more than anything a wireless equivelant can provide, especially if you are working in full duplex mode.

100Mbit ethernet should be fine (effective throughput is about 85Mbit these days). I don't see video streams going above that for a little while :), and the B network left behind will be more than enough for surfing etc.

Just my two english pennies.

Bite the bullet and buy the Extreme-N router. Your Mac Pro will love it too.

Not to mention it just looks sexy ;)

It's just hard for me to justify 180 for a router, when I can get similar performance out of a 99 dollar unit.

I bought it during the smack show, kind of a live game show for deals for 128+shipping from JR.

I pay J&R full price, then jellyfish sends me a check.

But I just realized I dont have a TV with component or HDMI :(
