How are you people converting your .mkv files to work on AppleTV with ATV Flash? I'm using VisualHub but the movies are choppy.

Playing in nitoTV gives me green screen and Saphire is so choppy it is unviewable. VLC won't run for some reason.
I'm gonna redo my AppleTV tonight and start over.

Ok... redid my AppleTV - factory restore, updated to latest ver, redid aTVFlash.
nito plays .mkv very choppy and I can't get VLC to do anything.
Anyone out there watching .mkv files on AppleTV or know of a way to convert .mkv's to work?

So this is probably not optimal, but this is what I have been doing to convert my HD .mkv files.
1. Convert the files in Handbrake using the AppleTV preset. I make some minor modifications, but keep it very close.
2. Import into iTunes. I have never had an AppleTV preset converted movie acutually play on the AppleTV. I'm sure one of my Handbakre setting are off, but I don't know which.
3. In iTunes, I use the "Create AppleTV version" in one of the menus. iTunes is VERY slow in converting the file, but I have found the files to look great and are very smooth.
If anybody wants to offer what I'm doing wrong in Handbrake, I could eliminate the time spent converting in iTunes.

Hi guys. I'll get right to it.
I've successfully completed the conversion of a 4.35GB .mkv file into MP4. However, whenever I try to play the resulting MP4, all I get is an error message reading:
"The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
I'm using FilmRedux. I thought it might've been something wrong with the application, so I went and also tried it on MKVTools, but with the same result.
What am I doing wrong?

I think I converted first in QuickTime, with video passthrougj because it's already .264 (or whatever- can't remember..) then convert in HB on atv preset with a few changes...
Thanks, David. Was that QuickTime Pro you were using there? I guess that means QT can, in fact, read .mkv files then. That may just be worth the $30.
But am still perplexed as to why the my converted .mkv files aren't recognized.

edit-- search on youtube and there is a video that shows you exactly how to do it.
Does their native app recognize .mkv files? I have the non-HD version and it didn't recognize an .mkv. Or are you using an alternative app which supports the Elgato?
I convert HD .mkvs all the time using handbrake or visualhub and they work fine on my apple tv. No additional itunes conversion needed. Just select one of the apple tv presets and expand the resolution so you see fit but you must make sure it is set at 24fps.
I hate doing this but its the only way. Visualhub used to work until i upgraded to snow leopard. now any conversions with visualhub skip.

Hi im using Handbrake as well to convert HD .mkv movie file... however i have a question regarding the quality of the HD video after converting it.
After selecting the Apple TV preset in HB i notice the picture size changing from 1280x536 to 960x400....
im not a pro at HB.. but will i see any loss of HD video quality?? will i still get the HD quality on my Apple TV?? Thanks

If your MP4 file is greater than 4GB i size it needs to be created as a 64-bit file. I don't know how to do that with FilmRedux or MKVTools, but with Handbrake you select the Large File Size option. The AppleTV preset creates a 64-bit file by default.
Otherwise if transcode the file so that the output is less than 4GB, it should also work okay.
I'm not sure if there are any passthru options in Quicktime Pro that enable a 64-bit file or not.

Yes it will be in HD Resolution, now whenever you convert from one source , MKV to M4V there will be some quality loss, but I find it to be very minimal. That's why I tend to convert from the actual Blu Rays themselves than from rips already done on the net.

The Apple TV preset will give you 960x400 up to 30 fps. If you want to keep it at 720p, then change the Picture setting to 1280 by whatever, and set the framerate to 24 fps. That will get you 720p for the ATV.
